Do a google search for Danielle Smith and you will find that she owns property here somewhere, but she is nowhere to be found now, just like the redhead Redford.

My family bought a home in High River, because we couldn't afford to buy in Calgary. (first time buyers)
Yes, the house we bought was flooded, and was remediated. We have all the tests, papers, and stuff to support it.
My whole point to this post is that we are very happy with our home. We are a young family with 1 child. Bought a 1600 sq ft, 2 story, 3 bedroom house with an open floor plan. Top notch appliances and of course the furnace and water heater are new. Bought for less than half of what this house would have been in Calgary.

Then I found out about the property taxes here......
Have I made a 'grave mistake'?

Help, I have bought a house in High River and can't get out..........

Did you forget step 2, and are now blaming Allison Redford, and Danielle Smith's limited public presence due to political turmoil that you didn't ask how much the property taxes are? Because your post kind insinuates that.

^ from what I can see the residential rate in Calgary is roughly 6.1% vs high rivers 8.7%.

Surprised the difference is that much. I'd assume the avg market assessment in Calgary is higher

That's how it goes. Airdrie and Cochrane and the like generally have higher rates as well, but the lower valuations make them cheaper.

i refuse to believe that someone was able to qualify and obtain a mortgage and purchase a house without at some point seeing what the property taxes would be

It was on our info sheets (most of them) when we looked at homes. And, if it wasn't on those, it was on the MLS listing online. We knew before purchasing, what the taxes were and what the monthly breakdown would be if we chose that route.

And if you don't like the taxes, why can't you sell and move? I'm not understanding this thread at all.

It definitely runs "high" most springs, not unlike most rivers everywhere. The name comes from Highwood River though.

Bit of a side comment, but I always love it when people that buy in High River, or some other town outside the city, downplay how long it takes them to get into the city and make the argument that their commute is really no different than people that live in the suburbs. Daily commuters that live in Okotoks will claim their commute is the same as those that live in the deep NW, while those that live in Cochrane will make a similar claim of those that live in the deep south. Uhhhh...

No doubt. It blows me away when people actually tell me it's worth living in Airdrie and working in Calgary. Worst theory ever.

I do feel bad for High River residents though. Taxes aside, no one deserves the mess they have in that town.
