Flames Russell nominated for Masterton Trophy as he closes on NHL shot blocking record

http://www.calgarysun.com/2015/03/31...hapter-of-phwa

Quote:
Russell’s willingness to step in front of screaming slappers is a big part of the reason the 27-year-old has been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by Calgary’s chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA).

The annual award salutes the NHLer who ‘best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.’

“It’s an honour to get recognized for something like that,” Russell said.

“It’s pretty special.”

It’s somewhat fitting Russell’s nomination for the Masterton Trophy is being announced as the Flames head to St. Louis, where he spent parts of two seasons with the Blues.

Good to see the nomination for Kris - would be even better if he wins.

I doubt "blocks a lot of shots" will come close to winning the Masterton, but a huge honour for Russell to be nominated by the local PHWA chapter.

Ferland also would have been a deserving candidate.

Who is most likely to win this year. Kris Letang maybe? Dubnyk?

I thought of Ferland too, but I think his story will still get a nomination down the road if he plays close to a full season, or a few, and establishes himself as an NHLer.

Good for Russ, he deserves it.

It's crazy to think of the number of Flames who might take home trophies (or at least get nominations) this season.

Gaudreau - Calder, Bing?
Russell - Masterton
Hartley - Adams
Gio - Norris (if he wasn't injured)
Hudler - Art Ross ( if he goes on a massive tear....)

I don't think he'll win, because the voters tend to ignore the description and go for "came back from big injury". But it's a fitting nomination all the same.

No way. Up until the empty netter that third period was pretty painful to watch. Give me a good possession team over that any day.

Caroline in the house!!!!

My kids love playing out at that old barn. They proudly display a photo of Kris above the door to get to the changingrooms.

Some friends of ours know the family really well and have nothing but great things to say.

There's no other way to prove dedication to hockey than to block 15 shots without any goaltenders protection
