Default QOTD: Are the Flames in trouble?

Two weeks ago the Flames were coming off a successful road trip and it looked like 94 points and they would be in.

Since then not a whole lot has gone right.

All their rivals are winning at a .700 clip meaning the Flames at .580 are falling off the clip.

The team looks a little tired

They probably need to go 5-2 in their final 7 with 5 games on the road.

Has even the biggest optimist taken a blow or two last night?

Voted probably. I like to think they still have a chance, but it's kind of out of their control right now. If we can get a bit of help in the OOT for once and we can win a few we'll be okay but it's looking like that won't happen.

Flames look like they are running out of energy. Not just the last game but the last 5 or 6.

I'm really thinking that these other teams have taken it to another level that the Flames can't reach. They boys are trying, but I don't think they are quite there yet. This season has been awesome to watch though and next season is going to be even better.

But then again, they could win the next three and what I just said will mean nothing.

I don't know where they will find the will and energy to get it done.
That said, they do find a way.
Cheers to one more time.

My hopes dipped this week with the Kings swept the New York region while the Jets just kept finding wins night after night.

The Flames are doing their part but the teams around them have gone to a new level.

Last night the Wild looked like cup contenders playing the Oilers, it wasn't close.

It doesn't change my view of the season, but my hopes have shifted from playoff spot to just having a chance in those final two games. I think needing to win both in regulation or something would be an exciting finish to the season.

Voted probably, as I think we are in must win territory. Could happen, but if they don't take the next two or three, the odds will be long. Piggybacking on another thread: I am not at all disappointed. They continue to battle, but don't quite have the horses yet.

I've been on the playoff bandwagon all season, but I think it's over. I doubt they can claw their way back in.

The other teams will lose occasionally, too.

I'm still holding out hope.

It's been a good ride, one that I thought would be over in November but what's done us in is the lose of Giordano.

I posted in another thread that the playoffs started last night in Minnesota. I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it is essentially true that if they lose four games the Flames are done for sure. 5-3 in their last eight looks like a pretty good chance to make it in.

I'm going to savour these last seven games, cheer hard, try not to get to wrapped up in the OOT scores, and remember that its been a long time since our team has been relevant.

Should be fun.

Well said. My feelings exactly. Last night game was very indicative of the Flames quickly getting a doze of reality about how hard getting into the playoffs really is in this league today and how it takes more than just heart and passion, of which Calgary Flames have shown plenty. But you also need depth, size and assets to sustain the pace. We don't have a lot of those yet, other than a few really good pieces. Just like most fans hoping for a miracle, I am sad and disheartened to see the playoff hopes vanishing with each remaining game. But very optimistic about the Flames getting better as a team going forward.

As said before, I just want the last 2 games to matter, even if that means having to get 4 out of 4 points without opponents getting any. At least that way there's a chance to earn it, and if they don't, well then they weren't quite ready this year.

I voted probably, mainly due to the ridiculous play of the other teams.

Even though they look fatigued, I don't buy that they are. Every other team is in the same dogfight. How much hockey has LA played in the past 3 seasons? They should be fatigued, but are finding another gear.

My hope is that the law of averages will win out. These teams can't conceivably keep winning the way they are can they? I saw a stat that the teams in the race are playing at a Presidents trophy pace. Maybe the Flames' blip is occurring a few games before Winnipeg's or LA's or Vancouver's. Maybe once we hopefully start to pick it up again, the others will regress a tad.

Also, can we never use "strength of schedule" again when trying to predict results? As long as you aren't playing a team that is tanking, the whole strength of schedule is pretty much BS.

LA and Minnesota look stronger to me now than at any point this season, I see them as locks at this point. My hope is that Vancouver continues to looks as bad as they did the other night against Colorado. It's right but there is still hope.

All I wanted was for them to be slightly over .500 this year. I wanted a winning season and I got that. They have nothing more to prove to me this year. It was a pleasure watching them this season.

Exactly. Calgary still plays LA and Winnipeg to end the season. I'm not understanding the extreme emotions around here lately. Unless you were expecting the Flames to win every game on the road, a loss to the hottest team in the NHL last night shouldn't have been a surprise.

It will take a small miracle to get in. But it's been that way since the start of the season. If there is 1 single team in the league who can pull a rabbit out of their hat and make it in, it's the Flames.

I honestly think/hope it will come down to the very last game of the season and us sneaking in by either 1 single point or the tie breaker.

We've lost four of five, and our direct opponents beat top opposition. An LA win today puts us three out with six to play.

Yes, we are in deep trouble.

In my not so humble opinion the season is finished. The other teams have gone to another level and Monahudreau isn't going to be able to save us this time. Fortunately, statistics told us this was coming and so we should not be surprised. Blessed be our Corsi overlords who have shame on us for believing that there was a chance.
