Default Perspective on the WC Playoff Race

Don't think I have ever started a thread here, but I felt that there was something to share.

I took the time to do the research and some quick math as a way of getting some context on how incredibly tight this race is and how well all the teams are playing.

I added up the records of the five teams (Van, LA, Min, Wpg, Cal) in the thick of it since the All-Star break and here is what I found:

The combined record of all five is a staggering 85-43-12. That is a .650 points percentage, good for 106 points on a season.

No surprise, Minnesota has the best record at 22-5-1, followed by,
LA at 17-9-2,
Van at 17-10-1,
CGY at 15-9-4, and
WPG at 14-10-4.

Point is, all these teams have been executing at a high level for a long time (>1/3 of a season), and whichever team misses the playoffs will have nothing to be ashamed of. The fact that the Flames are a part of it just shows to me that they are able to compete among an elite group and hold their own.

I don't believe they are done yet, but only time will tell.

Well said, and exactly right.

I said in another thread that there are at least 9 or 10 playoff teams in the west this year.

The fact that only 8 get in is just math, it is not an indictment on the other teams.

Calgary just needs to hope that one of these teams cool off. The ones unlikely to do it are the Wild and Kings; the ones that I think will is the Canucks and/or Jets. Leaning more towards the Canucks.

If we miss, the thing I take solace in most is that whoever beats us out of our spot will have earned it and thus, deserves the spot more than we might.

This is an excellent point. No one is "backing into" the playoffs. Everyone in this race right now, deserves to be there, including the Flames.
