Fair value but makes Brodie look like an even better deal.

Was just about to say I'd way rather have Brodie for that price than Tanev

Great contract Tanev!!!!!! (Jim Hughson's voice)

Don't know much about his defensive game but looking at his stats he seems like a 15 point guy making Brodie money (almost). He got himself paid handsomely.

Interesting d-man. Pretty steady in his own end, isn't overly physical, has very low offensive upside, doesn't shoot the puck often, but has a decent outlet pass.

Canucks have next to nothing coming up on D so they need to lock him up so this is a good move for them.

Add him to a long string of mid-20's defenseman that get locked up long term so they never see UFA. The days of picking up top 4 D are coming to a close for the next decade, either you pick up a mid-30's substitute and how they don't fall off the cliff for the term of their contract, overpay for one (or get extremely lucky to find a team in a bind, like NYI did)... or draft your own. If you don't, your team is F'ed.

Based on stats, Tanev is a better PK guy and probably a tad bit better defensively (guy's #2 in the league at suppressing shots against at even strength, #1 on the PK), while Brodie is miles better at... erm, literally everything involving offense.

This contract is a pretty good deal; Brodie's is an absolute steal.

What? Pretty sure Tanev plays on their top pairing. At worst he's 2nd pairing.

He plays over 20 minutes per night and is on their top pairing I believe.

..at any rate he's a top 4 defenseman, not bottom pairing.

Pretty much expected numbers and a good deal for the Canucks.

Just another reference to how great Brodie's contract is.

So funny, can't see the name Tanev without Jim Hughson screaming "GREAT SAVE TANEV!!!" in my head since watching that game.

Vancouver Canucks @VanCanucks
Benning says Tanev has limited no-trade protection throughout his 5-year contract. #Canucks

Us getting a ridiculous deal on Brodie doesn't make this a bad deal for the Canucks. It's a good contract.

Really only one dimensional. Maybe not a huge over payment but an over payment none the less. Living in Vancouver I'm forced to watch their games and Tanev is nothing special. Don't get me wrong he's decent and maybe the overpayment is because they have no one else similar in their system.

He's a top pairing guy defensively, our number 1 pk guy, plays against the toughest competition

it's a fair deal for both sides, eats up 3 UFA years as well
