Default Why does the ice suck at the Dome?

Seen it for years now, skaters falling for no reason, bouncing pucks, ect...
I thought it would be fixed after the flood but no dice. What gives?

IIRC, Browna or someone had a good explanation of this in a thread a while ago.

Something to do with no money being invested to fix the ice plant because they know they're moving to a new arena at some point.

I feel like they've been saying this for years now, and since we're probably a good 4-5 years away from a new arena opening, that's basically at least a decade of crappy ice (although it seems like the Dome ice hasn't been very good since the 90s).

I disagree. I see many rinks with good ice. Better than ours anyhow. Our ice is more like the South teams where the climate plays hell. Toronto has great ice. Montreal has great ice. Even the stinking Canucks have better ice.

Most of the US rinks yes but it appears the Flames may have the worst ice of the Canadian teams as I don't see the puck bounce in Toronto like Calgary and they have basketball in that arena.

In the late 80's and early 90's the Dome was regarded as amongst the best ice in the league after Edmonton. It's gone downhill big time as it's just barely better than the southern US teams ice.

Hey, maybe that explains why we have had success against them this season, same ice quality.

Back in the 90's I think that one of the kids that I went to school with had a father that worked on the ice at the Dome. I think that he may have even been the head ice maker or whatever. I wasn't very good friends with the kid but I hung out at his places a few times. I should have been nicer to him and tried to mooch some free Flames tickets.

I believe they did replace all the ice control equipment. They wouldn't have replaced the piping running under the ice, so if that's a problem, the new equipment wouldn't have fixed it. If it it is the piping, I assume they'd have to dig up the concrete floor and bury new stuff to fix it.

Free Flames tickets? Back in the 90s? They were basically already giving them away!

It's an old building, I doubt they've dumped much money into the ice plant with expectations of a new one soon

Yeah, because I am sure the players would say to the media their home ice sucks.

They keep the building too warm now. Back in the 80s & 90s you pretty much had to wear a jacket in the dome. Not any more. It's at least 20C in there now.
