McGrattan (CAL) is on waivers today.
Big Ern seems like a good guy. I hope whatever happens, works out for him in the end.

You knew it was coming. You knew it needed to happen. You knew there was no longer a spot on the team for him. You still hate to see it happen.

Kind of surprised there.

Wonder if he goes down to Abbotsford Adirondack or they work something out for a release.

The organization seems to love him. Have to think they have a role planned for him post playing career, a community ambassador for a drug/alcohol awareness program would be perfect.

Edit: Although Abbotsford would probably be a pretty lonely place for the poor guy. "Hello...anyone there?"

Thanks for the service McGrattan. Whether you wind up in Adirondack or elsewhere in the league, I will always appreciate your time here.

Unfortunately, you could see this coming. Wish him nothing but the best though, he's a great guy and played his role with a lot of class.

If he happens to clear and make it to Adirondack, I'm sure he will have a ton of wisdom to give to guys like Wolf, Van Brabant and Tousignant for their careers.

I'm sure this was a tough choice because he's such a character guy. But you can't have both Bollig and McGrattan as roster players in the pressbox. One of them has to contribute on the ice. Oddly, it's Bollig getting supplanted in the lineup which causes Ern to be sent down.

something needed to give, so not surprised. He is a class act and hopefully an opportunity presents itself to continue to play, but hope he comes back to the flames organization once he decides no longer to lace them up. Had to be discouraging playing 1 in game in past 21.

I wouldn't be shocked if someone picks him up. Watch it be the Oilers.

I have a feeling it'll be another Conroy situation, BigErn retires and the Flames offer him a position on the team.

On Fan this morning they were talking about the only positive for McGratton in all of this was that he was the 14th forward and instead of him getting waived it would be young developing guys who were getting sent down for development.

Some one must've been listening to the show and realized he was still around so waived him.

Sad for McGrattan, but not surprising. He was always a part time player, and while it was nice that we were able to give him one season last year as a full-time guy, there just isn't a spot anymore. I don't expect he gets claimed, so hopefully he can go down to Addy, get to play, and serve as a good mentor to the kids down there.

He might be at the end of the line as a player too, unless he wants to hold on beyond this season in the AHL. He has said in the past he wants to help others with addiction counselling, and I hope the Flames help him achieve that goal. A guy like McGrattan can do a lot of good for kids coming into the league who might fall into the same traps he did.

Something had to eventually happen with our roster, not enough spots for the younger players pushing from the bottom. I can see this as a give you a shot to get picked up before you retire and move into a player development role with the team.
