I see it pretty much a result of the way the Grid contract system young players hitting top contracts in the 2nd contract (like the new NHL)
The grid contract is really set up to achieve top dollar without prejudice in regards to Ov alone... with this you have GM making poor finical decisions. For example some GM re-sign every RFA for one season to save cap for the upcoming season and resigning at a small discount, while other resign 3 years without thinking of the long term possibilities
Added to this very little top flight UFA are thrown back into the pool and what we have is too many high end salary and thus dropping the value for the least attractive of the two...
There's a place to sign for 1 season and a place to sign for 3 tears and I really think a lot of GM don't give this enough respect. You really need to take a look at the curve of the player and try to time your contract well to stay away from mistakes. Plus too many times I've seen a guy 26 and get a 3 year deal. The team ends up paying more per season for the longer deal and they threw away another two season that they could have signed still as RFA and now paying even more to sign him as a UFA at max with 1-way
Just proof the GRID contract works and we as a pool of GM or ignorant and refuse to manage out cap with the never let an asset walk for nothing mentality. Its these vets right now and the process of moving them that are the damage of our incompetence
