AB Politics: Blakeman proposes Liberal merger with Alberta Party
http://calgaryherald.com/news/politi...-alberta-party
Quote:
Edmonton-Centre MLA Laurie Blakeman is offering to serve as interim leader of the Alberta Liberals for one year, if the party agrees to work toward an eventual merger with the Alberta Party.
Blakeman has presented her proposal to the Alberta Liberal Party board, which is meeting Sunday in a closed-door session in Calgary. She also shared her proposal publicly via Twitter, suggesting that a merged Liberal/Alberta Party could become “the standard bearer for a progressive movement in Alberta.”

I was excited for a minute.
Unfortunately, I came in after both posts were up so I didn't get any time to dream.

Pure, pure speculation on my part, but does Blakeman stick around now? Or do we have another floor crossing, or does it even really matter?
Edit: well I would say this says everything
Amanda Stephenson @AmandaMsteph 51s52 seconds ago Laurie Blakeman just walked out while media was scrumming party president. Did not stop to speak to reporters. #ableg #liberals

Alberta Liberals make losing an art form. I hope Blakeman crosses the floor. That would leave their old/new interim leader (bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Dr. Swann) on his own with Hehr and Kang going Federal and Sherman retiring.

Amanda Stephenson @AmandaMsteph 15m15 minutes ago New interim leader David Swann says he is willing to have merger discussion after the election, but there isn't enough time to do it now.

Blakeman's proposal wasn't even merger prior to election if it were this spring - just co-operation (not running candidates against one another and such). This is clearly a rejection of even that.
Swann is now saying he'd discuss merger after (but no cooperation prior to as per Blakeman's proposal?). Mind bottling.

What a bunch of crazy egomaniacs. Regardless of people's political views, it's a good thing for there to be an effective opposition to the PCs (regardless of where the party stands). At least arrange to cooperate with the Alberta Party so that we have a non-Wildrose alternative that stands a chance.

The only way the socially left has a chance is to align with the fiscally right voters who left the WR to the social radicals.
There are a lot of the fiscally right, socially moderate former WR members who are now without a party. They are not going to vote for a pro-tax, pro-spend fiscal platform like the Liberals advanced last time though.

Good news Libs! The Greens won't run against you in some ridings! They averaged 200 votes per riding entered in 2012. I'm sure that will make such a difference for you guys...

I'm surprised it's legal to have 3 different parties on your advertising. I suppose she is claiming all election expenses under the Liberals? What if their platforms conflict on an issue? weird.

The thing I really like about this is that she did it before the election.
Assuming that there is always an option to elect an independent then I think this could be a great thing if the left wing parties all agree to run unopposed. A better plan is to merge outright, but I think some of their leaders would rather lose than compromise.

Joke's on you, there just so happen to be 3 different Blakeman's that indeed are each running in the same riding under different parties.
