A car alarm has to be one of the biggest waste of money that you can buy. How many of us have heard a alarm go off and immediately called the police? As a await the crickets to silence...
One time, after another great Oiler victory over the Flambes, I walk out into the parking lot. I walk up to my car and the next thing I know the car next to me starts talking. No I was not drunk. A proximity alarm!
"Stand away from the vehicle or an alarm will sound! You have 10 seconds! WOOWOOWOOWOWO"
Yes the moron drive into a 1000 car lot and engages his proximity alarm in his car. It was -20C. What a way to make sure your car never starts! To say the least I felt like doing what the man below did.
A man annoyed by a noisy car alarm fired at least three bullets into a Toyota Camry, silencing the alarm and bringing out police who hauled him away in handcuffs, authorities said.
Man shoots Camry to silence alarm!

I agree when I hear a car alarm go off I usually do nothing about it but if I heard one go off and saw some dude rooting through the car I would probably call the cops and note what the dude looked like.

I just pop on the club, wherever I go. It's become a habit, I don't even lock it.

Uh, I wouldn't call them a total waste of money. While I agree that false car alarms are annoying, they do bring unwanted attention if you're a thief.
I live in a condo downtown. Bums routinely breakin to the parkade to do smash and grabs of spare change. 8 cars got hit last fall along one wall. The most obvious target, a spanking new 4Runner was spared. It had an alarm with several prominent LED blinking away. Breaking into that one would have cut short the time the thief could have to break into other cars.
Most alarms will cut out after a certain time to not p*ss everyone off indefinately and kill your battery.
At for car theft, if they really want your car, they can just tow it away. Nothing's stopping that.

Some of them also go off way too easy. On my street an occasional Harley will rip by setting every alarm on the street off. p*sses me right off.

I find two-way alarms kinda useful as you can see what's going on with your car if it's within range like outside your office or something.

I live on a busy street in Vancouver where car alarms go off probably 5 times a day outside of my apartment. Thankfully, the city has some regulation when it comes to noise pollution. I have the by-law control on speed dial and call them up when a car alarm has gone off more than 3 times in a 24 hour period or longer than 60 seconds continuously. They'll send a tow truck and tow the bas**rd and I'll be laughing from my balcony.
The day of the car alarm has come and gone. In BC at least all 2005 car models and on are legislated to be fitted with an immobilizer instead of a car alarm. They will gradually be phased out with a new auto fleet.

Not to state the obvious...but would not owning a $150,000 tow truck as your second vehicle stop you from towing away someones car?
Car Alarms, meh, I look towards where the sound is coming from, if I don't see the any car flashing I move on.
If a car theif were to break into a car with an alarm however I am sure he/she would bolt. That would be pretty nerve racking.

Here's an idea - why can't you just remove the brake and gas pedals while your car is parked? Im sure theres issues with that, but the basic idea sounds right to me!

I give you 9/10 for thinking, but 1/10 for practicallity. Here's why:
I see all sorts of people putting "The Club" on their car wrong; ie making it so you can still steer the car. Some people just aren't mechanically inclined. Do you want these people putting on their break pedals, then coming to a stop right behind you after?
Plus, how many people take their removable face plates for their stereo, never mind the break pedals.

While you can't move them, I think I saw something similar to the club, but for your gas pedal, they ain't going no where.

In the US, organized crime guys pretty much take orders for specific SUV's (ie Green Lexus RX330) and have access to their own truck to hoist it. They then shove it into a container and ship it to Asia or Eastern Europe. Buying a tow truck is chump change for these guys...
Clubs are easily defeated by bringing a hacksaw along and sawing through the steering wheel. The whole idea is to inconvience the potential theif enough he goes on to the next guy, if he wants your car, he'll get in, period.
