Need Advice: How to sell/get rid of my car
I have a 2001 Saturn SL1 sedan that is nearing the end of it's life cycle. The book value is approximately $1800. The problem for me is that i needs about $1800 in repairs. Repairs needed are a broken strut and brake replacement plus a few minor things.
I don't really want to go through the hassle of selling it on kijiji. I know the Heart and stroke foundation takes donations but I heard the tax reciept they give you is only $50. Would a car dealership take it even if we are not buying a new car?
Does anyone have advice on the best way to dispose of an asset such as this?

What you need is a Car Sales Agent. That Agent will post your property on autotrader, charge you 70% on the 1st $1000 of Sale Price 30% on the Balance.
He will hold OPEN Car events where he will sit in your car and show it to prospective buyers who are driving around the neighbourhood looking at OPEN Car events.
He will also hire a professional Photographer / Car Stager.
He will print out brochures / hand outs.
Most importantly, he will leverage his brand, his website & his sophisticated marketing systems to get Buyers to your car.
Don't be fooled. Autotrader & Kijiji is the bare minimum marketing tool to sell your Car. What you need is a Car Agent with a proven track record.
Also don't be fooled by Discount Car Agents who will claim to be able to sell your car for less commission.

Really? A car sales agent? You will be fine with Kijiji and Facebook Calgary Buy & Sell page.

Get it fixed first (I assume you either aren't handy enough to do it yourself or don't have the tools... if you can however, do it yourself as you can find everything you need to know about fixing the car on the web)
or find yourself a back yard mechanic to fix it up and then advertise it on Kijji but don't let the ridiculously low ball offers insult you.

You could take it to an auction.

when my truck was at the end of it's functional age I took it to an auction. People there buy it "as is". Some may want it for parts or for a short term purpose. that's your best bet. Easy to do as well.

Throw it on kijiji as is for $500-1000. Some backyard mechanic will buy it.

Pick and pull gave me $240 for a junker 1994 Sierra. Your best bet is like someone above mentioned to sell for 500-1000

Lots of good advice. Thanks everybody. This gives me a number of routes to go. Once I am able to sell it, I will let you know how I sold it and what I got for it.

If you make the repairs (without having to go to a "repair shop"), you'll definitely make more money from the sale of the car. But that certainly isn't the easiest route to go.

I'd throw it on kijiji for say, $1000, be honest in the ad about the repairs and expect a couple of lowball offers ($300-$700) just take the best one.
Might I ask what the other repairs it needs? Struts and brakes are both really easy and fairly cheap to do

If buying a new car, some dealerships will occasionally have a push/pull/drag sale where they give you a set amount, regardless of the condition of the vehicle, towards the purchase of a new car.

I just donated a car to the Kidney Foundation. A 1996 Toyota. They asked if the radiator was there and 4 wheels. Then said they'll give me $300 receipt for it right on the phone. You decide when they give you the number.
I told them ok, they came when I wasn't home, took my plate off and left it at my front door. They mail you the receipt.

Sale value would likely increase if you do not refer to it, or yourself, as 'Shaggin Wagon'.
