Default This Season Broken Into 7 Game Series

I was doing the research for this week's Fireside Chat podcast episode as to how the Flames season has looked so far, if we break it into 7 game series (like playoff rounds). I figured I'd share the info here in case anyone is interested, and I'll keep it updated as we go forward.
  • October 8 - October 21: 4-3 *Flames would've won in 7 games*
  • October 23 - November 6: 4-3 *Flames would've won in 6 games*
  • November 8 - November 22: 5-2 *Flames would've won in 5 games*
  • November 25 - December 9: 5-2 *Flames would've won in 5 games*
  • December 11 - December 22: 6-1 *Flames would've lost in 4 games*
  • December 27 - December 10: 4-3 *Flames would've won in 7 games*
  • January 15 - January 31: 5-2 *Flames would've won in 5 games*
  • February 1 - February 16: 5-2 *Flames would've won in 6 games*

Wouldn't it work better if you ended each series once the Flames or their opponents won four games? So,

Oct 8-15: Flames win 4-1
Oct 17-28: Flames lose 4-2
Oct 31-Nov 8: Flames win 4-1
Nov 10-22: Flames win 4-2
Nov 25-Dec 4: Flames win 4-1
Dec 6-12: Flames lose 4-0
December 14-20: Flames lose 4-0

and so on.

The thread attached above takes exactly that approach. Bob Hartley, however, uses the hard seven game format.

the hard 7 works because if you collect 8 points in each of the 11 seven game segments you are at 88 points with five games remaining. Ideally a couple extra points to get to 90 before the last five would definitely make things easier.

I don't believe so. There is more data to be had if you have the full set of results. You can track point distribution by segment, compare any seven game set to that of another team, etc.

That's interesting - I wasn't even thinking about it analytically; I just meant in terms of a motivational tool, which it seems to me is usually why coaches use this meme. Try to get the guys to win every series. Which makes more sense if you don't use the 7 gamer - "we're 1-4 this time out, so we've already lost this series, but let's see if we can win a couple to only lose by one" doesn't seem like it would get guys motivated.

I would think that splitting a larger data set into seven game segments wouldn't do much besides demonstrate that any given 7 game segment is too short to tell you much of use. But I could be wrong.

I think part of the reasoning may be that the hard seven game format allows for both a set of games that can be compared with other sets, and also to draw a bit of the feeling of a play-off series.

The number in brackets is the W-L series record at the date this season ends.
  • September 21 - October 2: 5-2 (1-0)
  • October 4 - October 17: 3-4 (1-1)
  • October 19 - November 2: 4-3 (2-1)
  • November 5 - November 18: 5-2 (3-1)
  • November 20 - December 4: 5-2 (4-1)
  • December 7 - December 19: 0-7 (4-2)
  • December 20 - January 7: 4-3 (5-2)
  • January 9 - January27: 4-3 (6-2)
  • January 29 - February 12: 4-3 (7-2)
I don't think preseason applies. I have the Flames up 7-1

My bad. I didn't even realize I did that. I've adjusted the table.

I've added the number of games that would've been played in each series if it was the playoffs, and if the Flames would've won or lost.
