Stadium Series 2015: Sharks to host Kings
Looks like Sharknado 3 is to be set in a Stadium Series next year.
Also... Kings? Really? Again?
Lame. Commence discussion about how these are overdone.

I went to the Kings vs. Ducks game and it was great.
I'm not sure how anyone can complain about going to a good hockey game while getting to sit outdoors in decent weather.
Kings vs. Sharks should be a great event as well. Hopefully its their first game of the season against each other. Would make for a good story line.
The people that complain about too many outdoor games are people that have never been to one I'm guessing? I would be happy to see every team play an outdoor game every year.
An Edmonton vs Calgary home opener in Commonwealth would probably sell a lot of tickets.

You know what's lame? People whining about the amount of outdoor games there are every year. They're well attended and make a lot of money. Guess what, it behooves NHL teams to MAKE MONEY.
Get over it. It's a thing now.

Edmonton is a craphole...the success of these games are putting them in good locations that people want to travel too.

No the success is selling a large number of tickets for a large amount of money. Edmonton is ideal for that.

I think that these games are fine in the local markets. If it helps the NHL to sell 10,000 more tickets than they ordinarily would, I am fine with that. But I will give this the attention that I would give any other Mid-February game: that is to say, I will check the score before I go to bed and not care regardless.
If the goal is to sell local tickets, likely mission accomplished, if the goal is to get a big TV audience... meh...

I agree but also get why people are antagonistic about them too. They are over advertised.
edit: Agree to the marketing. Not calling anyone lame/personal crap

There were too many last year. But this year, this is the second confirmed game in addition to the NYD Winter Classic. If they keep these to 2-3 a season, I'm cool with it. And it'll be neat to see a game in the new Levi's Stadium. I would tune in to watch this as opposed to a regular Kings-Sharks match up.

I don't think they're necessarily overdone, I just assumed that was where this thread would be headed when I set it up. Just want to clarify.
Also for the dude asking who else there is that could play in an outdoor game.... Oh I dunno, the NHL has 30 teams. Maybe give another team a chance or at least wait a year before awarding the same team another one?
Dallas, Phoenix, Colorado, St.Louis, Nashville, Minnesota...... There are a lot that have not yet had the chance.

I totally felt that the overabundance of outdoor hockey would dilute the excitement last year.
I was pretty wrong about that. The Yankee Stadium games weren't great, but the LA and Chicago games were fantastic.
I think the NHL can totally support two to three outdoor hockey games a season, no problem.

I've never been to one but I'd love to go to this. A hockey game outside in California? That sounds sweet!

The problem is not the number of games, but the lack of variety. American TV networks are convinced that only about six cities actually exist in the US, and we end up with nothing but retreads as a result. It is the constant reuse of the same teams that increases the tedium in the concept.
As a side note, When Fan960 was discussing this yesterday, Kerr mentioned that a large reason why Calgary hosted the Heritage Classic in 2011 was that Harley Hotchkiss really wanted an outdoor game for Calgary, and that the league gave it to him partially out of a debt of gratitude. The Flames were apparently after it since 2009.

If anyone deserved to get something they wanted like that, it was Harley, and the fact that they league recognized that is encouraging.

I think the issue is that a lot of teams don't want to be the visiting team for someone else's outdoor game. They want to host their own.
Minnesota is apparently next in line for the Winter Classic, and Winnipeg is next for the Heritage Classic. Both of those could happen in the 2015-16 season.

I imagine once the Flames get the arena/football stadium plans finalized they will be pitching for another outdoor game.

I'm betting the NHL will wait until Sun Devil stadium renovations are complete to bring a game to the desert. ASU would be an awesome location to host the game.

Where is the heritage classic being held this year? And can they host the Flames? Cause that would be cool.
Literally zero investment in these when it's involving other teams, but ours was crazy awesome. I'd like another.

There will not be a Heritage Classic this year.
The next one will likely be held in Winnipeg in either 2016 or 2017.
