I bought a digital camera and I need a new memory card. I am not sure how well the 16MB one they give you will work, since I like to take more than 10 pictures on trips.

Where is the best place in town to get one for cheap? And I mean real cheap. I also am open to suggestions on what size to get since I don't know if I need 128, or 256 or 512. I don't think I need the 1GB. I know there are some good photographers on here, so any tips? Thanks for the help.

What kind of card? CF, SD....

Mem Ex has some great prices for memory cards.

I think I need one that is an xD-Picture Card. That is all I really know about this sort of thing. I don't know what CF and SD are!

Does your camera have video capabilities? If so, and if you intend to use it, look for a larger card. 256MB+.

What camera did you get?

And yup, they give you those crappy 16MB cards specifically so you will have to buy a real memory card.

How many megapixels is your camera? How much of a digital packrat are you?

Myself, my 2 MP camera produces pictures that are about 500 KB in size. My 64 MB card I bought gives me about 120 pictures. That's about enough for me; any more and I would just end up storing them on the card and not uploading them.

If I had a 4MP camera I'd need about a 128 MB card to do the same thing.

it is a 5.2 MP camera... and I have been thinking of 256 or 512. I don't think I would do too much video, but you never know.

I basically want to have enough for a few "rolls" of film so that when I go on a trip I can just go and go. I think the 256 should be fine, right?

I've got a 5 mexapixel and have a 256 and a 128, and only once have I had to use the 128. With mine I can get about 90-100 pictures on the 256.

Having the extra space is nice for peace of mind though, with a 512 you're talking 200 pictures, good enough for a 2 week vacation.

photon, that is exactly what I was looking for. I could not find how many pics would fit on the cards. Is that on a regular setting? I know sometimes on weird settings you can fit less/more, but if that is the standard setting that's awesome. I have to ask the girlfriend how many pictures she wants to take!

And, actually I am a student at U of C!!!!! Totally forgot about the microstore. Gonna head up there or call them to check the prices. Thanks fotze.
