Default Backlund has abdominal procedure - still week to week

“@NHLFlames: #Flames forward Mikael Backlund had an abdominal procedure earlier today and is listed as week-to-week.”

Sucks to have such an ongoing injury like that for a guy at his stage of his career.

Missed games = Dollars lost.

Same injury from pre-season? He might've rushed it.. Backlund is finally starting to come around. Looks like a glass house tho.

Hope he comes back and stays healthy. The guy can be such a positive for this team, a big factor on the forward ranks but he needs to stay healthy.

I think we miss him the most. He was a major reason for that great record in the second half of last season.

With Monahan excelling in a bigger role, Backlund gives great balance to the centre position.

Injuries like this are a pain to rehab properly.

Obviously they were hoping that rest would heal it enough. Not quite apparently. Get better soon Backs, we miss you!

The injuries to Backlund and Stajan have forced Monahan onto a steeper learning curve. Fortunately he has been able to handle it - and in fact has excelled - so the injuries have been a blessing in that regard.

Nonetheless, I can't wait to see both Backlund and the new and improved Monahan in the lineup together.

So this abdominal surgery. Is it most likely that he's got a hernia and tore something?

It is really too bad but secures Granlunds spot on the team for a few more weeks. The silver lining here is the Flames now know Granlund can play a solid 2-way game in the NHL and Monahan can handle the tough defensive minutes and thrive

Yeah, since the start it's sounded like a sports hernia. The hernia itself is a hole in the abdominal wall torn or otherwise, which can be painful (in addition to plenty of other issues) but the hole never exactly fixes itself. It can become less inflamed and painful, but never closes on its own. Reason to do surgery during a season would be if debilitating pain persists, or other issues related to herniating contents arise. Probably a good thing ultimately that he got surgery if it is indeed a hernia repair, as the surgery has a pretty good success rate and persistent debilitating symptoms are rare. However (again, speculating if that's actually what this is, although I like my odds) it means we won't see him for at LEAST 8 weeks post-op.

Just because Granny and Monahan are becoming better and better at center doesn't make Backs expendable. Center depth and having some center's shift to the wing is just smart to have going longer into a season. The Kings have built there forward group this way.

Well, gotta feel for Backlund. Tough goings. What could've been a nice pay day at the end of the season is slowly dwindling into a half decent pay day. That and the team sure could use his defensive prowess.

I wonder if they'll change his status to month to month then. I know during recovery it's easy to reinjure yourself.

Buts if it was a hernia wouldn't he have gone in right away? Those are pretty easy to diagnose normally.

It was a tear:

Mikael Backlund says @NHLFlames had Ab procedure. I had heard a slight tear in stomach muscle. That's more than just week to week.

I thought that may have been the situation yesterday. Was purely speculation on my part but got it right. Even the sun shines on a dog's A## some days.
