Referee Tim Peel Suspended
Everyone's favourite bad ref was caught chatting with a blogger/media guy and having a shot of tequila. He's not my favourite ref and probably the worst in the league. Interesting penalty he got for his infraction.

Seriously? For that? Is the guy not allowed to have a life outside of reffing? He's holding a shot, he doesn't even look drunk in the photo. That's a bit overboard by the NHL/NHLOA or whoever hands down the suspension.
EDIT: After reading it sounds like he was suspended because he met with the media, not the drink. Overreaction by me.

The league doesn't allow officials to speak to the media and he got caught so he got suspended for a game... I don't see the big deal.
The NHL can't have refs talking and giving opinions in the media as that will put more calls into question and just create more controversy. Can you imagine if one ref called out another ref for a bad call? Why would the NHL expose themselves to that?
He also had a game to ref that night.

The second incident was a four-minute roughing/holding penalty assessed to Washington forward Alex Ovechkin. Peel is said to have told Wyshynski he wouldn’t have made such a call. But in a 4-0 contest? The league, in Peel’s mind, wanted the call made for the sake of “game management” to ensure a one-sided affair between two rivals didn’t get out of control.

I hate that BS. The NHL actually wants refs to make bad calls in order to try and my games closer or less intense? That is terrible.
A penalty should be a penalty no matter what the situation.

Yeah, crap like that is why the NHL is more like the WWE. The NFL is far from perfect, but I much prefer the effort they put in to the integrity of the game and its rules.

It's interesting to hear a behind the scenes take from an NHL referee but I agree with the suspension - you can't have these guys talking to the media.

It's really stupid that they have to wash their own uniforms.
Seems super bush-league.

Terrible PR for the nhl. This will be referenced for years everytime there is a make up call.

I think he is saying he calls the penalty so the game doesn't get out of hand rough or chippy or fights.

In a blowout in the NFL guys get ejected and penalties that don't always warrant them to keep the game under control...

I had tears coming out of my eyes from laughing reading this. Integrity? Have we forgotten all the wife beaters and the NFLs handling of it? Last league I would mention as an example of integrity.

I really do hate the even up calls that officials feel they need to call.

I think there is bad game management and good game management.
Bad game management is looking to call team B because team A has taken several penalties in a row and the officials want the score sheet to look reasonable. If team A is playing stupidly, they deserve the "one-sided" officiating.
Good game management is along the lines of what Peel is talking about, but without the "league wants" caveats. Case in point, the Calgary Hitmen destroyed Prince Albert 10-1 last weekend. Once the score was out of hand, the referees called several penalties that would have been let go in a close game to prevent the game from getting out of hand. They succeeded.

Integrity of the competition. In that regards, there is no competition. The NFL attempts to have its refs call a consistent game. The NHL is really lacking with it's make up calls, game managing calls, a ludicrous point system that awards more points to games where teams play to a tie... and so on. They are all things that make the NHL look like a joke in the eyes of people who didn't grow up watching the game.

Fan960 were talking about this yesterday afternoon. NHL Official's are not allowed to meet with the Media without prior approval.
They also mentioned something when he met with the Media he said the league were controlling the games or something like that.
That is the speculation as to why there was a suspension.
