QOTD: Flames dominance over the Oilers
more of a trivia question today ...
But first Flames dominance over the Oilers
I remember the Flames/Oilers record being even about 10 years ago, and the Flames came from well back to accomplish that. Now the record over Edmonton is 112-88-19-3 for a .554 win percentage.
That's 24 games over .500. Is that insurmountable? Would it take a generation to catch up? Another interesting note, the Flames always win in extra time. The Flames have only lost 3 games in extra time in 28 meetings (including the era when OT games ended in ties without a goal). That's nuts!
Calgary is 7-3 in their last 10, and have won the last 5 games.
Having said all this, the Oilers represent the Flames 11th most dominant record against NHL foes, as the Flames have a winning or even record against 23 of 30 franchises (included Cleveland), which surprised me.
Without looking it up what are the top 3 teams the Flames have owned, versus the 3 teams that have given the Flames the biggest headache?
Answers are below in white (drag across)
Flames Their Daddy
1. New Jersey - .703
2. Carolina - .672
3. Wild - .622
Flames Roll Over
1. Boston - .384
2. Montreal - .417
3. Philly - .441

Without dragging across, I actually do keep track of the Flames' records against other teams. We have a mastery of Edmonton, and IIRC we have a winning record against Vancouver, although not recently, that was established when we were a powerhouse in the 80s.
Teams that IIRC give us fits sometimes include Arizona and Anaheim

I have a lot of Oiler fans as "friends" and I continue to point out the Oiler Stain that is their playing record vs the Flames. It was pretty fun, but now they are just starting to agree that the Oilers suck, and that takes my fun away.

Wouldn't that number be more like 112 wins for Calgary 107 wins for Edmonton for a 5 game difference? Being over .500 isn't very meaningful when a lot of teams are both over .500 against each other.

I think we'll see the same Flames team we've seen so many times this season, lackluster 40 minutes followed by a solid 3rd to pull out the win. There's no pressure on the Oilers so I hope the Flames don't take them too lightly. Hope Hiller continues his solid play as of late.

Could be a tough game, if the Flames don't play a full 60 minutes...

I see the Oilers showing up tonight trying hard to get a win against the Flames but Calgary as the better team will win the game. Won't be easy though

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but aren't you counting 19 tie games as Oiler wins? Should be 112 to 91.

Technically I think everyone has dominated the Oilers for the last 10 years.

The third number is ties (old school), so the .500 record would only be -3 if you want to look at it that way

Conversely, the Oilers only have a winning record against 18 of 29 NHL franchises, with Calgary being 5th in their list of teams they have trouble with.
Bruins, Stars, Wild and Red Wings are their top 4
Edmonton does well against the Jackets, the new Jets, and the Lightning.

Ah makes sense. I thought we'd have more than 3 otls. But I guess you made that point in the first post.

As someone who was a toddler in the 80s, I'm not aware of very many BoA games from then. How were the Flames against those Gretzky-led oilers back then? I would have thought with their dynasty they woulda racked up the wins against us. Were they mostly evenly matched games? Tilted to one side?

I think everything is pointing to the direction of an Oilers win. They are playing with the most confidence they have had all season and the Flames looked against the Wild like the same team that was missing nets and making goaltenders look better than they were during the December losing streak. I simply think that showing up only in the 3rd period which has really been a season long issue may not cut it tonight.

The Gretzky-era Oilers used to tear the Flames to bleeding shreds, stomp on the shreds with their skate blades, scrape the red mulch off the ice, and throw it into a pool specially stocked with sharks with frickin’ lasers on their heads. It was ugly.
Seriously, it seemed that the Flames always appeared to be in those games at some point, giving as good as they got, and then WHAM! The Oilers would score three unanswered goals and run away with the two points.
All that changed in their final meeting of the 1985-86 regular season, which I have reminisced about in boring-old-fart fashion elsewhere. The Flames won that game 9–3, and went on to beat the Oil in that year’s playoffs. They never got embarrassed again, except for one bad stretch in the 1988 playoffs. From then on they played the Oilers pretty even until the never-ending rebuild started up north. Since that, of course, it’s been all Flames. Tough to have a good battle when only one team shows up.

I think the Oilers win tonight and get a shut out to boot.
What happens now? Does my prediction cancel Bingo's "jinx" out?
