Default Calgary area Rockyview Motorsports Park design revealed

http://metronews.ca/news/calgary/769...sign-revealed/

Quote:
Kilometres of rolling racetrack, a specially designed area for police to train and numerous other sports and recreation facilities are included in the first-phase designs for a motorsports park being pitched northeast of Airdrie.

“This is going to be more than just auto sports,” corporation President Dominic Young said Sunday. “We want to see all sorts of sports and recreation.”

As an example, Young said a group has come forward hoping to establish a soccer centre with both indoor and outdoor fields. The concept designs also show room for tennis courts and Young said he could see hockey arenas being established onsite as well.

There will also be a portion of the roughly 400-acre site devoted to a centre focused on automobile and motorcycle safety. Young said his group intends to explore possible partnerships with Alberta Transportation and the Alberta Motor Association.

The racetrack’s design has been undertaken by internationally renowned German engineer and architect firm Tilke, which recently developed the Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 track near Austin, Texas, and is working on a circuit in Sochi for the inaugural Russian Grand Prix next year.

Looks great, now they just need country approval.... Not the easiest thing to do. I can't tell if they are trying to beat the Badlands resort or not, but I'm not too keen on having two tracks. The odds of both surviving is slim, would rather have the focus being spent on the one with the best chance to proceed.

Serious question - do people like auto racing enough in Alberta to support this?

I get the feeling that the sport facilities for soccer and hockey are the things this will be known for....

If this does get the go ahead, I wonder if we could see F1 coming to Calgary.

Doubt it. Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is too classy and popular a facility to drop from the F1 calendar...

Might see some more proper racing though, perhaps the ALMS series or Grand Am Rolex. Who knows, maybe even Indycar.

No. Indycar, maybe. F1 - not a chance. Just not a big enough city and it costs a tonne of money to bring the race in.

Yes approval is going to be difficult but from what I've read both have done their homework and are presenting very good cases. And I'm all for having two tracks!

YES. There is more than enough money (ie: cars) in this city to support a track. Hell RaceCity was doing 'ok' all while being a run down dump of a facility.

It's really too bad how the whole Racecity lease issue went down because we're still probably 2-3 years away from a new track being completed.

They don't technically have to drop Gilles-Villeneuve. The original plan for this F1 season were to have 2 GP in the US, Austin and Jersey (Street course). So they are not necessarily against the idea of having 2 races in the same country. Granted, the enthusiasm for motor racing isn't as high in Canada as it would be in the states (I assume)

Maybe not, but we've got Edmonton a few hours away, plus A LOT of corporate HQ here. Also, potentially, in the midst of tourist season, could definitely boost those numbers. I wouldn't go with not a chance, but it is very slim.

I was hoping this would be more like Miller Motorsports Park in insted of some euro fanboy road course facility.

From what I have heard Edmonton does really well with some of their races so Calgary should be able to build off of that popularity.

I was hoping it would be able to host more than just Go Kart and Road course type racing. Thinking we do need another MX track in this city and we could also could use a place for white trash and fart can cars to go fast in a straight line.

Done and done.

There are also longer-term plans for future development phases that Young said could include an off-road or motocross racing course, and, potentially, a drag strip.

And most of the money would go to Ecclestone. Who wants to help pay for his daughter's 8th trip of the summer to a resort in Dubai?

When the numbers start to make sense, it might have to be timed to coincide with the Stampede to get the type of mass it would require.

I'm sure they could put a large roundabout by the entrance to fulfill people's oval racing needs...

Here's hoping for open track days. Or at the very least track time rentals...
