Default Speculation: Players/Flames Players for Under 23 NA WC Team

Interesting concept just announced for The World Cup of Hockey in Sept 2016. Two additional teams: Team Europe and a North American Under 23 team.

Look forward to seeing Monahan, Bennett and Gaudreau on it. Monahan wearing a letter. Maybe Hartley as coach as a great teacher and bilingual coach for media purposes.

Let the speculation begin......

Really pumping up Poirier when he hasn't played a single NHL game yet.

This is U23 for all of North America. The team will be very good.

There may be no Flames on the team.

What's the cut off?

Gaudreau turns 23 August 13th 2016? He might not make the cut.

Gaudreau and monahan will be there IMO. All poirier/Bennett need is a good start to there rookie season and they're borderline on the team, it will be a good team but u23 means players drafted from 2011/2012 and from there to 2015, there won't be many 2015/2014s on the team, there is a good possibility they will.

Bettman just told Freidman, 23 and under so he will qualify.

Care to name 12 better forwards under 23? I can't.

Mackinnon this season:
GP: 48 G: 9 A: 18 P:27 +/-: -7

Sean Monahan has scored more goals than any player drafted in 2012 and in 2013. He will be entering his 4th year as a pro in 2016 and likely will be the Flames undisputed #1 centreman. Barring injury, there is no way in hell he doesn't make this team IMO.

Gaudreau won't be on that team.

He will be on Team USA proper.

Not eligible. Apparently it's "young guns" team first. If he doesn't make the young guns team he is eligible for team usa.

Now THAT'S a dumb idea.

Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal at the age of 22, Connor McDavid may be just as good as him and would have to play for Team Young Guns instead of Team Canada? Lame.

makes the team more competitive though..

McDavid, Eichel, Drouin, Gadreau, Monahan.

Ekblad, Hanifin etc on D

IN Goal may be where the team will struggle though as 23 and under goalies rarely do well in the NHL.

Crosby should have been on the 2006 team as well.

But it's only the World Cup and a one off event, depending on whose selected (Flames players) I'll probably cheer for this young team over Canada.

Did they not announce the cut-off date with the official announcement? Not much point in speculating until we know who's eligible

To save anyone else the time, assuming it's 23 or younger in September 2016, you're looking at guys drafted in 2012, 2013, 2014, or next draft.

Depending on the cut off date, probably a good chunk of 2011 as well.

It will be awesome if someone doesn't make the under23 team, but then makes the national team.

No chance of that happening in Canada. But I suppose a small chance in the US (still highly unlikely).

Let's say for the sake of argument that Gaudreau didn't make the under23 team, would he make the US team?
