Accusations of Drinking and Partying at City Hall
http://m.660news.com/2015/01/20/coun...-at-city-hall/
Apparently a pretty explosive morning at council.
Quote:
Nenshi claims he’s received reports of councillors getting drunk at community events, and even using illicit drugs, but he didn’t name names

How can Nenshi claim to not know what a person on drugs looks like?
There is a photo of him flipping pancakes with Rob Ford.
I also doubt Druh is someone that would be invited to "wild" parties where there are drugs. Everyone knows she'd be the one to narc.

"she started picking on me first!" has to be the funniest thing I've read in days. Sean Chu better tell his mom on Druh.
I'm in the apathy camp, as long as council members aren't molesting children or cheering for the Oilers, I don't care if they party like Rob Ford. "Community events" could be anything, there needs to be something a little more specific than just saying buddy got drunk. Well, so do a lot of people, not all of them reprehensible ne'e'r-do-wells.

Depends on the extent of it. If it's having a glass of wine after a meeting, then who cares? But if it's getting drunk at community events and using illicit drugs as Nenshi has indicated, that's a big deal.
Councillors have to be careful what they do in public or on the taxpayer's dime; this isn't Toronto and Rob Ford.

isn't this to be expected when concillors routinely attend openings of hemp and snowboard shops and new self serve gas stations?

As long as I'm not paying for the booze, I don't care. And that they don't make council decisions drunk off their rockers.
Of course I probably am paying for the booze.

Me too. If the event has alcohol and is being held outside of council time let them get wasted if they so desire.

Who cares? As long as it's not on our dime and it isn't affecting their ability to do their jobs then let them drink, smoke or snort whatever they'd like too.

I think the problem is it is on our dime. Also citizens would be arrested or fired for doing drugs at work and we are paying their salaries.

It sounds like it is during work-time

Nenshi and Farrell have also taken issue at this public meeting with councillors having wine or drinks during breaks at long meetings, something Coun. Ray Jones defended in a recent Herald story.

Little bit surprised. All the places I worked (in corporate Calgary), drinking during work hours has always been a no-no

Personally I'm fairly apathetic, but given the vague wording of the term "community event" I'm going to assume in this case that it was an event in which they were representing the city brand, not just some get together with friends. If that's the case, it's likely a good idea not to be hammered. And if you hold a public office, it's seems pretty obvious that maybe you shouldn't be doing illicit drugs publicly.
It's kind of funny because we'll laugh and jump all over it when we see Hall or "Nugey-Hops" partying after a loss, but when it's a city councellor it's "meh".
As ah123 pointed out, that generally wouldn't fly in corporate Calgary. To a further extent, if I'm out on some United Way fundraiser representing my company, sure it's not on company time, but I'm pretty sure if I was drunk and started lighting up I'd be shown the door. At least that's what it says in our A&D policy.

People need to lighten up. There are countries where company cafeterias have beer on tap. Having a beer or two =/= getting wasted.
