Ortio staying up? Won't be going to the AHL all star game. Update: assigned to Addy
Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
Hmmm....interesting. The #AHL just announced #Flames G Joni Ortio would not be available for Sunday/Monday's all-star festivities.
Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
Instead, Manchester Monarchs G Jean-Francois Berube has been added to the Eastern Conference roster.

Weird. Is there a roster freeze for the ASG? I don't see why they wouldn't send him down

I suppose the All Star game isn't really a meaningful game, but it would have been great for him to play in it.

It is an honor to be chosen to participate in an All-Star game, but it is not something many players care about attending. At least in the NHL. Not sure about the AHL but I would assume it is similar.

Treliving chimes in on the goalie situation.
Quote:
“Well, we’re looking at a few things,” Treliving had said before the puck dropped on Wednesday’s game at Anaheim. “Right now, we’re day-to-day. We’ll get through (Wednesday) and see where we’re at. To answer your question, yes, we’ve given a lot of thought to a plan. But things can always change.”
“He’s deserving of the games he’s getting, obviously,” Treliving said. “Like I said, we’re going to continue to look at the situation. Obviously, having three goalies quite frankly — from a roster standpoint — is not ideal. To say we’re going to do everything to keep him up, we’re going to continue to see where we go with it.
“It’s hard to speculate what’s going to happen. But we’ll play (Wednesday) and see where we go from there.”
|
Quote:
“At the same time, we don’t want to forget about Jonas and Karri, too,” Treliving said. “Karri is coming off an injury and Jonas has given us real good hockey this year. But you’re right. The good news is it’s better than the alternative. We can deal with the good news.”

Even though it seemed kind of obvious, I thought this might be too quick of a decision for Bourke/Treliving. I now think it's more than likely they are trying to move one of Ramo/Hiller out to keep Ortio here.

Thought for sure he would be sent down. He finally lost a game, let in 4 goals, perfect excuse for the Flames to go back to Ramo/Hiller. Didn't think they'd make a trade quite yet, but now I'm not so sure. Hopefully if Treliving does do something it will include something to improve the 5/6 d-man situation.

I was wondering if something was coming when Wotherspoon was called up. The Flames Management was very certain next time he was called up, it was to stay. Figured there was a deal in place or coming shortly with someone on defence that meant Wotherspoon was coming in full time now.

True. Even at the NHL level, players often try to get out of it. The NHL has in recent years made a point of publicly saying that players who are chosen and do not attend without a good reason will face discipline. It's a waste of a weekend for a lot of people, at least from a hockey perspective.
I would imagine that they discussed it with Ortio. If it was a big deal for him to play in it, they probably would have accommodated him. Just a hunch.

There is no roster freeze.
I thought they might send him down because Addy has a back to back this weekend.

He gave them an easy out to send him down last night. Not cause one bad half of a game negates what he did previously but, up until that point, he made it impossible for the team to send him down. Now they can do so, but mostly because he's the only one they realistically can send down than anything else.
Maybe they just want to keep him up to skate with the team a few extra days though? That or maybe there are some doin's a transpiring on the old trade front....

My theory is that this is a perfect time for Ortio to stay with the team, with the trainers, with the goalie coach. He played awesome in four NHL games, got lit up and pulled in the 5th (tho it wasn't his fault). Now he can regroup, watch a ton of video, practice, work out, rest. While being around the Flames.
Either way if they end up keeping him up for another test after the ASG, or sending him down before the next game, I think this is a good decision. Plus I'm sure he appreciates the pay bump. The AHL ASG takes a back seat here.

It would be foolish to trade Hiller. While he isn't a top 5 goalie by any means, he is the only veteran goalie with legit NHL experience that we have. Like him or not, if he got hot at the right time, like he did at the beginning of the season, he could carry us to the playoffs. He is our guy that Ortio has to force out of the crease IMO.
Ortio, I like, do not get me wrong. However he isn't ready to carry an NHL team, you can't rush these things.
Ramo has played well, and IMO that makes him a very tradeable asset to someone like Detroit or Nashville who has goaltending injury woes.

Exactly, with games Friday and Saturday I thought this would be a great time to send him down, let him play, then bring him back up for Tuesday as Adirondack has a week off for the AHL ASG.
But as someone noted above, keeping him with the coaches and watching video would probably be good for him too...

Well he won't be able to practice. Teams can't hold any team events until Monday. Also I imagine most of his teammates and even a lot of the Flames staff will be leaving town during their only in season "vacation"

Might not be a bad time to move a goalie.
Bobrovsky out long term again and they may need some help in Columbus.
Rinne also out again in Nashville, Hutton hasn't been great this year, and 1st place is at stake.
Washington, and Tampa Bay may look to get a goalie to give their starter a rest down the stretch.

If the intent is to keep him up, I'd prefer that they don't send him down for a few games, or even the all-star game. The quality of play at the AHL level won't match what he's been facing (especially on this road trip), so I think it's better if he stays sharp against NHL shooters, not AHL ones...

I find this interesting. Would have been really easy to send him down after the loss, especially with the Flames being on the all-star break.
Yet they didn't. To me that means they are at least looking at other options.
From Ortio's perspective regarding the AHL all-star game, ask yourself this: would you rather go play in a meaningless game (the nomination is the gift, not the game) or stay with the Flames and get paid? Pretty easy choice from his perspective I would think.
