I have to agree with you on the terrible commentary. I know we are spoiled with Hrudey and Ball but the call tonight was one of the worst in recent memory. There was a lot of dead air time and pointless rambling stories.

Oh and that glove save on Marleau was a absolute show stopper.

One thing no one has talked about was how the flames didn't get outshot or outplayed. Many of the Flames wins this year (even in Arizona), saw the flames outshot but they made the most of their opportunities and cashed on when they had to. That is rarely a recipe for sustained success. This game saw the flames lead on shots, shot attempts, shot attempts 5v5, and scoring chances 5v5. If that can be repeated, the flames will be looking better in the future

Randorf really tends to ramble and tell stories when he calls games, instead of calling the play. He'll share stats and junior/hometown stuff like most guys, but he also spends an inordinate amount of time repeating what has happened in the game so far, or what a player has done so far this season, instead of simply calling play by play. I imagine he'll get better with practice. Galley and his "Bomba" pronunciation wasn't helpful.

And oh yeah, great win!!

I liked it, I don't need to hear every minutiae of the play. This isn't radio. A little silence is okay and when the colour guy went on some spiel, it was irritating.

Granlund with 3 hits after sitting. Bollig gets 6 hits in 9 minutes

That is how the bottom 6 needs to be able to contribute.

I accidentally recorded the first part of the game on Omni channel, and got the Punjabi commentary for the first period.

Upon realizing my mistake I started recording the CBC feed. Honestly, should have stuck with the Punjabi guys

LOL. That was Paul Romanik, who is probably one of the best PBP guys in the business (one of Sportsnet's best moves was to bring him back from his exile in Europe). I think they mentioned it after the game, but he sounded sad because he had a through infection/was sick. Pretty impressive showing from him.

No mention of the too many men penalty? It was a joke. If they're going to call it that way, there'd be 20 too many men penalties per game. The timing was very suspect as well. Could have been a different game if the Sharks weren't gifted that one.

Yup, as I mentioned in the GT the rulebook says a player within 5 feet of the boards and not involved in the play is considered on the bench. It was an awful call.

Cool money stat, from flames NHL page.. Awesome how humble he is also.

Quote:
The overtime goal was Monahan's fourth in 120 career games. At 20 years and 89 days, he's the youngest player in NHL history to score four career OT goals, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"Everybody that plays hockey, they want to be the difference maker and I think in those times it's do or die," Monahan said. "I want to be that guy to make the difference and lucky enough sometimes that happens."

Granund's game isn't physical, how many hits someone gets is a poor way to judge how they're playing.

He was very involved last night. Quite noticeable to most.

That was Granlunds best game in over a month and I think the time he and Raymond spent in the pressbox helped both of them. I like that Granlund has been trying to be more physical and isn't afraid to go to the front of the net and screen the goalie. He's developing nicely this year. If he keeps up progressing we might have another Backlund on our hands.

As for Byron he needs a game or two in the pressbox and see if it can help him as well as it has many other players this year.

I did not know that. I just thought it was more of discretion on the refs. That was an absolutely terrible call then!

Thanks for the insight.

When deciding what to call, they seem to go by whether the player coming on the ice has engaged in the play (typically meaning - touching the puck) before the other player gets off.

The Flame coming on (can't remember who it was), hit the Shark who had the puck before the other Flame got to the boards. They call that every time.

Interesting coaching decision to put the two healthy scratches on the same line. Really worked out. They did play like they had something to prove and it was that line that started the push back in the second period. The period could have gone full Keenan were it not for them.

There's a fluidity about Hartley's lineup choices this year that I quite like. You sense a constant process of evaluation going on and no hesitation to make changes based on that. I've been positively surprised a few times.
