Default Macleans:Canada's race problem worse than in America

Macleans is really on a roll. Sensationalism sells magazines, I guess. Now it is targeting all of Canada:

"The racial mess in the United States looks pretty grim and is painful to watch. We can be forgiven for being quietly thankful for Canada’s more inclusive society, which has avoided dramas like that in Ferguson, Mo. We are not the only ones to think this. In the recently released Social Progress Index, Canada is ranked second amongst all nations for its tolerance and inclusion.

Unfortunately, the truth is we have a far worse race problem than the United States. We just can’t see it very easily.

Terry Glavin, recently writing in the Ottawa Citizen, mocked the idea that the United States could learn from Canada’s example when it comes to racial harmony. To illustrate his point, he compared the conditions of the African-American community to Canada’s First Nations. If you judge a society by how it treats its most disadvantaged, Glavin found us wanting.

Consider the accompanying table. By almost every measurable indicator, the Aboriginal population in Canada is treated worse and lives with more hardship than the African-American population. All these facts tell us one thing: Canada has a race problem, too."

because this article attacks all of Canada for a race problem, not just Winnipeg and the prairies.

The article has nothing to do with Winnipeg.

Canada has a reserve problem first and a race problem second. Reserves should be abolished, all it does is create siloes and isolation.

Why didn't he compare Canada's First Nations to US First Nations?

Because then he couldn't call Canada worse, and use sensationalism to try to sell the magazine.

That would make too much sense, therefore has no place in the article.

He's not wrong about racism and natives. But what the article doesn't touch on is the history and reasons for that divide. All it does is point out that being aboriginal in Canada might be worse than being African in the US.... Which is a fairly pointless fact in my opinion

I am not sure how you can measure racism to say weather or not a country is is better or worse.

I guess all racism is "bad".

Every culture has positive and negative role models.

Do they teach critical thinking in journalism school? I guess these days you don't need journalism to go to school.

I don't think its outright racism. I think we've all just grown up in the same system, and for lots of people its just the way it is.

I agree that Canada has a huge problem though. Gonna take another generation or so to fix though.

This. Or compare the black communities in the two countries. Or Hispanic. Or homosexuals. Or any group. I am guessing that is what the Social Progress Index does. Ridiculous article.

Likely 2-3 generations if not more. And that's assuming the reserve system gets axed in our children's lifetime (I don't even have kids yet). The mistrust is so ingrained on both sides, and families teach their kids the same values they had growing up (even if not intentional) . . . It's going to be a long, hard road to truly get rid of racism in Canada.

Just looked at that issue of Macleans last night. The article in the OP was a short one page editorial. The much longer cover story was about Manitoba. That story moved me to tears.
