Woman died in arms of injured husband after alleged drunk driving crash
Haven't seen a thread on this topic yet. Accused has Balfour Der as his lawyer so I bet he gets a slap on the wrist

Smith, 38, was killed when the 2001 Ford F150 pickup truck she was in was T-boned by a 2009 Mercedes-Benz C63AMG sedan on Bow Trail S.W. near Sarcee Trail around 3:15 a.m. Sunday morning.
The truck spun and struck a large power pole about 60 metres away. Both occupants were ejected.

Not to downplay the drunk driving aspect, but were they wearing seatbelts? If not they both could be alive today, the drunk driver walked away unharmed.

Yes, both victims were wearing seatbelts but the accused ran a red light going 180km/hour
Both were ejected

That doesn't make any sense. Where is it reported he was doing 180? The photo of the victim's truck doesn't look like it was torn in two, where it would be possible for them to be ejected..

Something doesn't add up. How do you get ejected from a vehicle while wearing a seat belt?

I think I read the truck spun out of control and hit a pole, which then ejected both people out of the car. I hope the drunk driver gets punished to the full extent of the law, but its so sad to see the death probably could have been prevented had they wore their seatbelts.
To be clear, I'm not condoning the actions of the drunk driver whatsoever. It's still 100% his fault.
Edit: Wow, my reading skills suck...

I have come across accidents with people either outside of the seatbelt or partially outside of it with the belt still buckled. Seat belts don't stop your body from leaving the seat in all types of crashes (for that you would need a 6 point harness).
Because they were ejected doesn't neccessarily mean they weren't wearing them (and properly).

Exactly. I don't think people should make assumptions here. We don't know for sure.

I don't know the guy, but every time i see him on tv, he sure sounds and looks like a slimy defense attorney.
It boggles the mind how drunk drivers aren't given murder charges when they kill. Pathetic human beings.

Driving drunk at a speculated 180 km/h and killing someone deserves a murder charge IMO. This guy wouldn't get a second chance if it were up to me. On that subject, how long is he likely to spend behind bars if found guilty (seems like a slam-dunk).

By that reasoning we should just change the dui charge to attempted murder.

I agree that you can't call it murder because proving intent is impossible. But vehicular manslaughter charges definitely deserve to have much, much stiffer penalties.
