Default Fox buys National Geographic for $725 Million

Fox buys a controlling stake in National Geographic for $725 million.

Quote:
The 127-year-old nonprofit National Geographic Society has struck a $725 million deal that gives 21st Century Fox a majority stake in National Geographic magazine and other media properties, expanding an existing TV partnership.

The agreement announced Wednesday will give the company controlled by Rupert Murdoch's family a 73 percent stake in the new National Geographic Partners venture. The society retains 27 percent ownership. The move shifts the longtime nonprofit flagship magazine into a for-profit venture.
I fully expect future headlines to be along the lines of
"Climate change, fact or liberal propaganda?"
"Sharks, are they corrupting your children"?
"Are Pandas fueling terrorism?"

Or worse yet... 24/7 pawn stars and ice truckers! Wait....

Didn't Fox do the new Cosmos series? That went straight after climate change with no political filter. I know Fox News is total trash, but the rest of the Fox network has always seemed to distance themselves from it. Hopefully that continues and NatGeo doesn't become a total joke like Discovery and History, it's pretty much the only channel left where you can still find real science and knowledge shows

Cosmos was like that because of Seth Mcfarlane and his clout at Fox, he made the show he wanted because he could, I have little faith in Murdoc and his cronies not ruining National Geographic. I mean its Nat Geo now, soon it will be NG..

I swear the movie Idiocracy is a prophetic movie

Keep in mind that the National Geographic Channel has always been a joint venture of Fox and the National Geographic Society.

All this really does is put all of the Society's media assets under a single umbrella. The Society is still a separate entity, which will have a minority ownership of the new joint venture.

Quote:
The new expanded joint venture will operate as National Geographic Partners and will combine the National Geographic television channels with National Geographic’s other media and consumer-oriented assets, including: National Geographic magazines; National Geographic Studios; related digital and social media platforms; books; maps; children’s media; and ancillary activities, including travel, location-based entertainment, archival sales, catalog, licensing and ecommerce businesses. Combining these assets into one organization will create greater opportunities to pursue National Geographic’s mission of increasing knowledge through science, exploration and research.

So it begins. Fox run Nat Geo lays off the most staff it's ever done in history. 180 of the 2000 current Nat Geo staff have been laid off.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifes...839_story.html

Cue the reality TV shows, Honey Boo Boo and Ow My Balls.

According to the article:

Quote:
Several people in the channel’s fact-checking department, for example, were terminated on Tuesday, employees said.
Fact-checkers being terminated by a Fox-owned company? NEVER!

I loved how WaPo pulled that line out specifically in an article that notes out that Fox axed people in most departments. The irony of one media conglomeration offering deeply biased commentary to criticize another media conglomeration's deeply biased commentary was rather staggering.

It's begun! I saw a Nat Geo ad for the "Science of Stupid". How long before they drop the science part?

180 layoffs seems pretty reasonable given there is bound to be overlap within divisions.

I'm thinking the fact-checking department is probably the wrong place to trim if you're being taken over by Fox.

Yeah... I expect it's gonna be no good.
For 45 years Nat Geo has partnered with PBS to produce Nova - a science based weekly mini doc on something awesome - and I expect things like that partnership will go now.
Nova is pretty much porn for the scientist. So good

Hands off Nova! Frontline, Nova and Nature are institutions that have to be protected

Well, I guess this was to be expected?

New National Geographic is creating fictional dramas!

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/badlands-texas/

The tiny town of Terlingua, Texas is shocked by the murder of one of its well-known residents when a man is found dead outside of a bar by one of the bar's employees.
