Default Notes from Jan 5 Practice: Likely Granlund, Jones out. Backlund & Raymond in vs Wings

Jooris and Smid have joined practice cleared for contact:

Quote:
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
As expected, #Flames C Josh Jooris (hand/wrist) looks to be full-go today. Was wearing no-contact jersey Sunday.

Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
Also, Flames D Ladislav Smid re-joins main group. Has been out since Dec. 12 due to upper-body injury.

Granlund & Jones likely Scratched against Detroit. Although Granlund's availablity would likely depend on whether Backlund was actually playing. edit: Hartley confirms Raymond will play Wednesday, Backlund will be a gametime decision

Quote:
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Granlund dons the green jersey along with McGrattan and Jones at practice this morning. That's your extra line for today. #Flames

lines:
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
Gaudreau-Jooris-Hudler
Glencross-Monahan-Colborne
Raymond-Backlund-Byron
Bouma-Stajan-Bollig
McGrattan-Granlund-Jones.

D-pairings:
Giordano-Brodie
Russell-Wideman
Diaz-Engelland
Smid-Potter

Smid practicing Potter likely means the Flames think he won't be ready for Wednesday

Ramo is the confirmed starter

more updates as they happen

Too many bodies now, this team could use a trade.

Thats not really the way it usually works. He likely needs a stretch of games to find his timing again.

Sucks to see Granlund will be sent down, but he'll be back up with the big club before years end.

Granlund needed the time off. He was looking pretty lost at both ends of the rink the last week or so. Almost all young players need to have time off occasionally to get their head straight and watch the game from up top.

Jones has been average, but not terrible. I'm guessing that Hartley wants him to be skating harder and using his size as much as possible…be aggressive. That's what this team needs out of Jones, and if he's not doing that he doesn't add much to the lineup.

Raymond had 2 games off to "think about what he's done", or hasn't done as the case may be. Hopefully his conditioning is up to par now because he was looking oddly slow for those 10 games back. I don't care if he adds offense right away, but I want to see him back using his speed again. If he can't do that, he's a little like Jones in that he doesn't add much to the lineup.

I was almost hoping McGrattan makes it into the lineup this game, but that's wishful thinking. I hope he gets at least another game or two before the Flames cut ties, which is all but a certainty at this point.

Does this signal that Backlund will be activated and Granlund demoted?

Is Jones healthy? Sure he hasn't been lights out, but it would surprise me if he was a healthy scratch.

So the possible lineup would be:

Glencross-Monahan-Colborne
Gaudreau-Jooris-Hudler
Raymond-Backlund-Byron
Bollig-Stajan-Bouma

If everyone is on their game that's a pretty good lineup. Not great, but good.

I'm honestly surprised that they haven't yet. I wonder if they're working on an off-ice role for him or something. Could that even work with his contract I wonder?

Everyone is healthy right now, so Granlund should be sent down soon.

My question is, is he the first call up when someone does get injured? Maybe it depends on how long the injury is, because I would like to see a little bit of BVB or Hanowski if the stint is small.

Granlund was a great Backlund replacement, but I don't really want him called up if a player like Bouma/Bollig/Byron get injured.

Depends on the player getting hurt, of course, but I'd like a look at Poirer and Wotherspoon before the end of the year, and I'd like another look at Sven and Ferland. Seto is a wild card too.

That said. Granlund looks like he's got the team made at this point, just a numbers game. I don't think he's down in the AHL for 10games. If there was another spot on the roster, I bet he'd have been told to find a place to live.

If we needed another center I'd love to see Arnold get some time at this level. He looks to be doing pretty well in his first pro season and I'm sure the Flames would like to reward him with some time in the NHL.

Also, Hathaway has been a nice surprise down there too, so he would be in the conversation along with Hanowski or BVB for wingers with a physical edge and some offensive instincts.

I'd say it would be Granlund, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was Ferland.
