Proposed Trade Baertschi for Gormley
Gromley is being sent to the AHL with some speculation that he wants to get played or traded
LInk
Quote:
Brandon Gormley knows that he’s not going to get the minutes he had been hoping for, and he’s made a similar request to the one he made earlier in the season — play him, or trade him. Once he’s healthy, he’s a decent, young, exciting defenseman — we’d hate to see him go, but the Coyotes could look to move him out of necessity.
|
The Coyotes do not have any small skilled non-gritty forwards other than Sam Gagner.
Baertschi would almost immediately be slotted into a top 6 role there.
The Flames have only Wotherspoon and Sieloff who are at all close to being NHL ready.
They also have a weaker / getting paid too much #5/6 pairing in Smid and Engelland... Both or either Smid and Engelland need a more skillful pairing mate.
Diaz is a disaster and makes them look even worse than they do when playing together.
The Flames should pull the trigger and trade Baertschi for Gormley.
They need to do this before the Jets offer them Petan for Gormley.

Well, to be fair, this trade won't be all sunshine and roses. The deal can be done but we have to do it "before the Jets get them offer Petan for Gormley" for it to make sense.
Once the Jets make that offer, our offer isn't as good anymore.
"Hey Coyotes, have the Jets offered you Petan yet?"
"Not yet, but when they do we're all over th......"
"So they haven't? Great! Baertchi for Gromley, no take backs!"
"****, they got us!"

I don't know Gormley so I am not saying this like I know or anything, just throwing it out there.... but 22 years old and still only 190 lbs on a 6'2" frame. Is that a sign that he isn't overly keen on putting the time in at the gym to make himself a better player?

If Gormley is indeed asking to be traded and reducing his value to the Coyotes it makes sense that there will be other teams that will be interested in him.
I mentioned the Jets because they currently are desperate for NHL ready d-men due to their rash of injuries.

I propose: Setoguchi and the rights to Chad Billins.
Yeah...that oughta do it.

The Coyotes do not have any small skilled non-gritty forwards other than Sam Gagner.
"Hey get me some more small non-gritty forwards", said no GM ever.
Thtis trade could actually work though. I wouldn't even balk at a late round pick or low level prospect being included, just to add more defence depth like Gormley.

why would you say he is 190 lbs?
Monahan is currently listed on NHL.com as 6-2 185.... I believe he was significantly heavier than that when he played his first NHL game.

Yep but a GM might ask for someone who can score some points and grittiness not important.
My point is that unlike the Flames who have an abundance of smaller non-gritty skilled forward the yotes don't have any.
For Baertschi to play on the Flames he has to beat out Hudler, Raymond and Gaudreau ... On the Yotes he will always have 2 linemates that can provide the grit...... unless he gets on a line with Gagner.

Is this kid any good? Is he a future NHLer beyond a bottom pairing guy?
If both check out then it's worth considering.

I got what you meant. I just thought it was funny expressed as something they have a shortage of. YOu could just say skilled forwards. Smaller and grittiness don't really enter into it, since bigger and gritty plus skilled is even better.
They Coyotes do have Reider, Domi and Samuellson as guys with a lot of skill.

That's true. But those GM's who are smart enough to consult the ever-trustworthy RGI index will see immediately whether or not they are in a position to take on more small, non-gritty forwards.
In any event, this seems on the surface of things to be a good idea.

I think this is exactly the kind of player the Flames should be going after. They need to target young defensemen and I think this is a good fit for both teams. I also think the Flames should trade Glencross to the pens for one of their young defensemen.

He may not have to wait that long to get his playing time in Arizona... all the insiders are saying that the Coyotes are about to go full seller mode.
Should not be long before a spot opens up for him.

I am all for this deal, as I suggested it weeks ago. I think I was about the 20th person to come up with this proposal.

Young defenseman, absolutely.
Young defensemen who do not play well enough to crack the lineup of a mediocre hockey team, and then demand a trade, I am not so sure...
