GPU advice R9 270X vs 750GTX
Looking at upgrading my GTX 480, have narrowed it down to these 2, wondering if you guys had any input on the two cards, leaning towards the R9 270X its about $50 more here in Iceland but seems to be the better card.

GPU Boss is bad.

Based purely on benchmarks, the 270 is the better card.

Well R9 290 is doable as well, Asus. Have to give this some more research tonight, tired of the old GTX 480, even tropico 4 has its fans running on high.

I have dual GTX 460's and I'm holding off until the GTX 800 series comes out in October. The performance jump from the 700 series to 800 is supposed to be pretty massive

Waiting for the 800 series is good advice. 700 series will price drop and the 800 series will have silly performance and likely be able to handle 4k with ease.
Are you interested in Gsync at all?

Not right now no. Not sure if I can wait for the 800s, tired of my loud video card lol

If you don't care about Gsync and don't want to wait for the Nvidia 800 series I would say the R9 270 is what you should get.

Another reason to wait. The 800 series is using a brand new architecture that costs less, uses less power, and produces less heat. That means they'll need far smaller heatsink/fan combos than the current generation of cards do

I have a Gigabyte R9 280x and really regret buying it. Constant artifacts problems in game, can't use the latest Radeon issued drivers as it causes screen flickering (only outdated Gigabyte drivers work). Terrible customer support from Gigabyte. My two cards previous to this were both Nvidia, went with the R9 since it was such great value at the time. With all the research I've done on these problems, it seems like the R9 series has problems across multiple manufacturers. After this, I'm not buying another Radeon card for a while. Will probably junk this card and get a GTX 800 series card later this year.

I just ordered my 270x get it in a few days as it was out of stock, but it seems for me the best way to go for now and once those 800 series go down on price, hopefully next summer I'll pick one of those up.

Strange, I run a HIS r9 280x and absolutely love it. Runs all my games on ultra without a stutter.

If you go to newegg and read the reviews on those cards, its a hit and miss, and very common sadly for people to have run into problems, artifacting and noise.

BUMP!!
Need some advice as I'm waaaaay out of the loop for good cards these days and badly need an upgrade. I recently updated my MOBO/RAM/CPU but held of on new vid cards to spread cost over a longer time frame.
I have 2 of the exact same cards that Thor has (had?) and have $400 burning a hole in my pocket.
I'd like to find either a single card in that price range that will outperform the dual 480's I have now or a new dual setup.
I was originally looking at this card:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX54224
but not sure if spending that much extra money is worth it. Pretty sure a huge increase in $$ doesn't necessarily mean a huge increase in performance.
So...you have $400, what would you do? I don't mind adding a bit more money if the increase in performance is worth it.

I wouldn't spend the extra $$$ on a 980, the performance boost from a 970 just isn't enough to justify such a big increase in price. And with the 8GB version coming soon it really doesn't make sense to spend that much now. Right now with your budget, this is the best card you can get
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX53999
I bought one of those to replace my dual GTX 460's, and it doesn't disappoint. I can play any game I own at max settings, including Star Citizen which is one of the most punishing tests around right now

Outstanding, thank you.
If I were to buy a second one down the road for SLI, I'm assuming that would do a pretty decent job in future proofing my rig?
The dual 480's served me very well for years and I'm hoping to be able to have the same long term performance for the next cards I buy.
