The Unicorn to close June 2015
Well that's a kick to the gut
Quote:
The Unicorn Pub is one of several businesses that will have to vacate to make way for Quebec-based retailer Simons.
The pub has made the depths below the iconic Lancaster Building its Stephen Avenue home since 1979.
Bob Bradley, co-owner of the Unicorn, said the watering hold will vacate the premises by June 2015.

Wow, I'm pretty sure I spent more of my student loans there than anywhere else (including tuition).
Hopefully it moves somewhere else and lives on.

Great. The only not gross or overpriced pub downtown.

Bear & Kilt has been the best downtown pub in Calgary for years, IMO.
That being said, I have left many a night in The Unicorn.

Damnit, how is this the first time I've heard of this place. I love hole in the wall bars.

A long time ago, when the Earth was green,
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen.
And they'd run around free when the Earth was being born,
And the loveliest of 'em all was the unicorn.

I've been there a couple of times and yeah I understand the sentimental aspect of it, but really the place is a dump.
If your thing is cold, mass produced food and warm, mass produced beer, then I'm sure you'll find a replacement fairly easily.

My dad's store, Henry's Jewellers will have to relocate as well.
He's been in the same location for 35 years! I spent so much of my life in that store, hanging out with my dad at work on Saturdays since I was a kid. I used to clean the windows for a dollar until I got fired for asking for a raise.
It's sad really, but oh well, such is life.

They are vacating, but are they relocating?

I think they are relocating once they are kicked out. Still a massive bummer, I spent many good nights there in university and after work.
It's also unfortunate that all of the small businesses are being kicked out as well.

It sounds like they are trying to find a new location but Bradley said staff will be offered positions at two other pubs along Stephen Avenue.

Hopefully the search for a new location isn't a long process - and off Stephen Ave.

This is really sad, I love this place. Going to have to find a new hole in the wall. Bear & Kilt is the only one I can think of downtown.

That's sad. That top floor of TD is the only thing left that has that old 1920s wooden look from the classic Lancaster building.
I loved the food court as a kid where everything was still the old dark wood and brass rails look from 1919 in there. Can you still see the staircase from the food court?
Henry's Jewellers and that area are the only thing left of that mall that still reminds me of my childhood.
Simons is a pretty boring store, it's a French-Canadian discount Bay. I hope they keep some of the classic Lancaster building elements alive. I don't see why the Unicorn has to vacate. They could leave it alone in the basement.

Yep,
My aunt would take myself and my sister for lunch in the old Lancaster building, Was disapointed to see the Cristy's Chicken shack shut down.

Look on the bright side, this is what you are getting:

I am sure all the Gleeks in Calgary are jumping for joy.
