Default Burke and Treliving on Analytics Panel @ PrimeTimeSE Conference

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Settling in for the main event (at least for me) at #PrimeTimeSE. Brian Burke moderating analytics session featuring @kyledubas. Up next.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
At this session last year, we learned that the Maple Leafs had money budgeted for analytics but typically didn't spend it.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Also on this analytics panel - Brad Treliving, Dan Marr, Kyle Dubas and Kevin Abrams (NYG AGM).

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brian Burke on the Flames use of analytics: "We think we have the best analytics guy in the NHL. He’s been with us several years."

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Brian Burke kicks off analytics panel by saying analytics are "grossly overrated." @PrimeTimeSE

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brian Burke on analytics: "This notion I’m a dinosaur about it, I resent greatly."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brian Burke, and he's right here, says we too often confuse statistics with analytics.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The #leafs coaching staff is provided with analytics info every day, per @kyledubas.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brad Treliving: "When you drill through all the clutter, it’s info. You’re trying to disseminate what's useful information & not so useful."

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Brad Treliving says the #flames have upped their investment in analytics over the last few months. "It's another tool for us; another lens."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Treliving references the analytics work in Calgary of Chris Snow, who Burke called best in the business. Snow is a former journalist.

David Shoalts @dshoalts
Baseball is a series of identical repetitive events while [hockey] is a series of random events: Burke on why analytics suits baseball more.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brian Burke says he saw Moneyball as a great survival tool for a small-market team, not a blueprint for a championship.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brad Treliving said in Phoenix he could really relate to Moneyball and Oakland: "It was really transferable for us in Arizona."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
I've said this before but the Flames are in really good hands with Brad Treliving. Reasoned, intelligent. Always learn something from him.

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Kyle Dubas says as OHL GM analytics were a way to "remove some uncertainty" in player evaluation. Says "we're just scratching the surface."

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Brad Treliving: "Ultimately it is another tool, another lens" Says CGY use internal (linemates, style of play), external (player procrument)

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Dubas: Greatest takeaway from Moneyball was searching for inefficiencies in the market, not judge everyone by on-base percentage.

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Brad Treliving: "That’s a challenge in our sport - to get real data. Meaningful data." #PrimeTimeSE

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Burke: Raptors spent $3 million on cameras, says a conclusion was "if you force players to shoot from further out they make less shots"(1/2)

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
(2/2) Burke: "I told [Masai Ujiri], 'I could have saved you $3 million.'

Kevin McGran @kevin_mcgran
Treliving: Teams hiring bloggers wasn't to silence them, but because the bloggers were doing good work.

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Burke: Thinks MLB has done a great job of engaging fans through analytics, thinks they can be a great way to "marry your fans to your team."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Treliving points out the benefit to hiring someone whose analytics analysis is public: There's a body of work to measure and judge.

Stephen Whyno @SWhyno
#Flames GM Brad Treliving on old-school new-school analytics argument: "People are ignorant on both sides." #PrimeTimeSE

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Dubas says analytics use in TML front office isn't to replace anyone but to "add layers to our evaluation process & add greater context."

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Treliving: There is this idea of new school vs old school. It is another way to look at things. It is not to say the "old" way is silly.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Talk has moved on to scouting. Good line from Burke: "The scout who drafted me in Philly? Probably got fired."

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Burke: We make scouts submit their lists before meetings, so guys don't get bullied into liking a player b/c the head scout likes him.

Cörey Masisak @cmasisak22
Burke: I think you're going to see analytics more in the later rounds where you might not like the guy but the data says he can play.

Irony: the data for late round draft picks is often spotty and unreliable.

It'd be the same as early round picks wouldn't it?

I mean the data collected at all lower levels is pretty slight compared to the NHL but it's fairly consistently collected is it not (What's tracked in the OHL is the same for Joe Schmoe as it is for Conner McDavid).

Some Burke quotes on discussing salary arbitration at the same conference:

David Shoalts @dshoalts
Brian Burke on salary arbitration: Told Brendan Morrison night before "you started this fight so you can't complain if kicked in groin."

@sportsnetmurph: [Burke] told arbitrator Morrison was like "a mouse riding on the backs of elephants" as he was with Bertuzzi, Naslund.

Here's a radio interview Burke did with TSN Radio in Toronto today. He covers much of the same ground as the tweets in this thread: http://www.tsn.ca/radio/burke-analyt...-down-1.137781
