He's going to get calcified arteries if he doesn't stop the strenuous long distance stuff.

So that makes him a goof?

I'm sure George has actual physicians and trainers with knowledge of his physical health and capabilities that can better make that assessment than a CP armchair doctor who know's nothing about him.

Why is that always the response? It's well documented that overexertion through extended cardio exercise is detrimental, hence why I try to point it out every now and then so people don't keel over from heart failure.

Of all NHL goons, I always thought that Laraque was one of the most likeable. He didn't make his fights overly personal and was (still is) a pretty nice guy off-ice by many accounts.

You could have made your point without calling one of the nicest former NHL guys a goof.

Since his retirement he has been a bit of a goof though. He was tricked into some bogus CHL union thing, was involved with the Green Party and Elizabeth May and now a trip to the hospital for a silly hill climb.

I think he is likely a great guy and maybe that is a bit of a problem is that he rushes into things in order to make a difference without thinking about it first.

OK fair enough, he is a great guy and I don't want to see harm come to him.

My sister is friends with him. I always voiced my displeasure with her for hanging out with Oilers and former Oilers so she has always shamed my family for that reason, but from what she tells me, he is an extremely nice and humble dude.

Good to see he fine after this incident

Can you please post some articles on this topic?

I would be interested in reading them.

Where is this documented? Where are all the professional cyclists and long distance runners that are getting heart attacks from calcified arteries? I'm not a medical professional but it doesn't sound plausible.

I did about 1000KM of cycling this summer as a total rookie who hasn't cycled since I was a kid. I'm really curious as to the distance and elevation covered in this race and what was so wrong with George's technique.

-edit

I figured out their route from landmarks. This is a 1.5 KM ride with a 100 meter climb. I wonder if Laraque in the wrong gear or something?

Still in preliminary research, however most dietitians, doctors and health gurus I research avoid grueling endurance exercise because of the harm it causes. Jim Fixx, the guy that was responsible for the jogging boom, died of a heart attack at 52 (albeit he did have a reported genetic predisposition). I've been into exercising and health for over 10 years now and everything I've learned points towards long distance cardio (specifically the long grueling endurance races Laraque participates in) being unhealthy. A few articles:
