Notes from Nov 17 Practice - Hiller starts against the Ducks, Jones gametime decision
- David Jones was not present at practice. He suffered an upper body injury during the Sens game on Saturday. no word on severity
- Kris Russell also missing from practice. Russell missed some time in the 1st period against Ottawa, but at the time it was believed to be equipment issues.
- Diaz took Russell's spot on the PP
- Baertschi has worked his way up to the 2nd PP unit, at least for this practice
per Derek Wills the Flames PP units were:
Glencross-Monahan-Setoguchi
Brodie-Giordano
Baertschi-Hudler-Gaudreau
Diaz-Wideman
update:
per Steinberg Flames lines were;
Glencross-Monahan-Setoguchi
Gaudreau-Granlund-Hudler
Baertschi-Jooris-Byron
Bollig-Bouma-McGrattan
Ferland and Reinhart as extras
- Setoguchi filling in for Jones and likely in against the Ducks if Jones is a no go
- looks like McGrattan in for Reinhart against the Ducks
update 2: - Hartley says Russell's absence was maintenance and he is "for sure playing tomorrow"
- David Jones is a game time decision against the Ducks
- Hiller is the confirmed starter for tomorrow

Like it or not, Setoguchi makes the most sense as a replacement for Jones' role on the PP - he plays the most similar game. Though Jooris might have a really good argument.
Main trouble on the 2nd unit is faceoffs. They will cost the Flames 10-15 seconds per loss. Other problem is defensively. It's a shorty waiting to happen. The best defensive fwd is Hudler and he plays down low generally. Diaz is giveaway-prone and Wideman is slow. Diaz may have to cheat backwards when Wideman shoots, in case of a block.

Is there any speculation on what happened to Jones? I noticed while editing my way through the game highlights that Chiasson threw an elbow at his head, but I'm not sure if he connected or not.

Hopefully Russell is good to go tomorrow night and we don't have to rely on Diaz.

Hartley needs to stop using Setoguchi on the powerplay. It's like a toddler trying to force a square through a round hole.

Who do you replace Setoguchi as a net front presence in this instance? I'm not a fan of seeing Setoguchi on the power play, but like GioforPM points out, it is the most natural choice under the circumstances.

I wonder at what point does Granlund get a chance. He could easily be a winger on the PP.

I'm okay with Setoguchi getting powerplay time.

Any of the injured guys are back, he doesn't. Absent that, his other choices are Granlund, Jooris, Bouma, Bollig and Byron. Out of those, only Jooris and Bouma fit the size and style of play of Jones, who's being replaced. And out of those, I think you can flip a coin with Setoguchi. It's also a matter of having had previous practice in the system.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
Jones and Russell did not skate today. Russell (maintenance) will play tomorrow. Jones (upper body) will be a game-time decision.
Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
Hartley confirms Hiller will get the start tomorrow against his former team, the #NHLDucks.

Jones is probably either shoulder (past injury) or head (per post above).
I liked his play recently, but the guy is definitely an injury magnet, and its a bit distruptive to have him in and out all the time.

It's also about developing young players and not putting them into positions to fail or that the coaching staff doesn't think they are ready for yet.

Right call giving Hiller the net, even though Ramo won on Sat night. Hiller won't need to get up for this game.

Glad to see baertschi getting some powerplay time. That's a lot of passing ability on that unit.

Glencross, who is on the same unit as Setoguchi? Or maybe someone who actually has a point so far this season?

Is Ferland good to go? I know he is green, but I would bet he would out-produce Gooch

I should add that it might mean that Jones is more likely to play than not.
