Default Canadians not impressed with new HNiC

Quote:
An Angus Reid Institute survey of 1,504 adult Canadians about their thoughts on HNIC, now being produced by Rogers Media network Sportsnet, the new Canadian NHL broadcast rights holders, found that 74 per cent of them felt MacLean’s reduced role hurt the show’s brand. George Stroumboulopoulos, who replaced MacLean as the host of HNIC, did not fare well in the survey, which was not a surprise given that it is early days for the new look and people tend to resist change. The poll found that 60 per cent of those surveyed do not think Stroumboulopoulos, an accomplished interviewer and host, is a “credible replacement” for MacLean.

It's fine, if Strombo would slow down when he talks people might like him more. He yaps way to fast.

More games are televised. Who cares what the useless filler in between periods?

Not too surprising considering there was likely a "it's not broke so no reason to fix it" feeling for most viewers.

It seems like most changes were made because Rogers took over not because they were needed or improvemts.

And like Sportsnet always seems to do "hipness" seemed to be higher on the list than quality. Strombo is supposedly hip and popular with young viewers but he is obnoxious and much worse at his job than Maclean.

I like Stoumboulopoulos, but he seems a bit out of his depth sometimes. MacLean is smart, knows enough about the game, rules and history to help steer a conversation. Strouwmboulopoulos just seems like he's there to introduce the segment and then sits back and just there for the ride.
But i'm older and grew up with HNIC, this just doesn't feel the distinctively Canadian hockey broadcast i've grown to love like and cherish.

It's early. These results would be expected for any change. If this poll was done when Ron McLean took over it'd be the same. Meh

I love the new stuff for the most part. HNiC was a great consistent show, but this can be too

Was this poll taken of exclusively people over 50?

It's been a breath of fresh air. Not a perfect program yet, but they're trying some new things and new voices. I'm totally fine with it. I just don't know why they haven't continued "After Hours". I thought those were decent segments most of the time.

Strombo is not a problem imo. MacLean is self-centred and I'm glad his role is diminished.

The problem is most of their panels are populated with just terrible staff.

When it comes to sports, in particular hockey, Strombo will never approach the levels of Hodge or MacLean.

I am just happy that there are 5+ games to choose from in the 5:00 PM timeslot and not Toronto EVERY Saturday night as the only game. The monopoly that CBC had on all day Saturday used to piss me off. I had to listen to many a Saturday Flames US road game on the radio because of no TV.

Strombo and his earing do suck though.

Maybe if their post game coverage didn't ignore the game hat just happened in favour of some fricken b level midget kids from red deer that I couldn't care less about, then people would like it better. I came to watch the game, I stayed after to watch some analysis which you would expect from any sort of professional broadcast. Not to hear about how some 17 year old has already decided she is going to UND to play for their girls hockey team.

End rant

I'm not sure I see how he is self centered. If anything, he has had to surrender a lot of journalistic control sitting next to Don Cherry for his whole career.

I don't mind Strombo, but I can see how he is a little too hipster for a lot of people.

Canada could use a little more hipster, or hipness anyway. Trust me when I say Strombo isn't really anything like hipsters.

Well most Canadians like Don Cherry, so that says it all for me.

I really like the new format. While HNIC had always been great, I think the new format has elevated it to the 21st century without losing any of the tradition that made it great in the past. The new set, the graphics, the new music has all been top notch. I think Strombolopoulos has been fantastic as well.

Yeah, I think those segments are pretty cringe worthy.

"The second star is Mark Giordano, he plays for the Calgary Flames."

Thank you for telling me that kid, I feel enlightened.

I am willing to let them get settled and see how they are once they are more comfortable in their new roles, but I have a pet peeve with the Strombo set. I hate the coffee table setting, and the fact the camera angle is such that these guys spend more time picking out a flashy pair of socks than they do preparing for the segment. It is distracting, and I have a hard time taking the whole thing seriously.

That is all such odd stuff to have such strong opinions about

I've enjoyed the new format, but I refuse to defend it until they get rid of Healy.

Everyone is always so pressed for time. Has it always been this way? Feels like a constant zipping around of air time to the 100 hockey people Sportsnet has hanging around in various capacities
