Default Larry Brooks: There’s a good chance the NHL salary cap won’t increase

Quote:
TORONTO — NHL general managers are no longer operating under the assumption that the cap is going to increase next season.
The projected decline in the Canadian dollar — up at least temporarily a tick to 88 cents on the U.S. dollar as of Friday — has had an impact on discussions regarding extensions in at least three cases, front office sources have told The Post.
Further anecdotal evidence suggests these are not isolated instances.

Good news for us I would think.
Might pressure some other teams though. Hoping we benefit.

If that happens the Hawks are screwed, 15 players signed and about 3M in cap space. They will also have 3 RFA's to sign including Saad.

Makes sense. The Canadian dollar is diving.

http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?fr...to=USD&view=1Y

That always hurts the NHL's finances.

And Timmonen.

The Flyers are a bit of a special case.

The RFAs are Kruger, Saad, Rundblad...of the 3 Rundblad ($.6million) is completely expendable and replaceable...Kruger, at a Current $1.35million is a little expensive for a utility/4th line guy, I could see the 'Hawks walking away from those 2...UFAs: Rozival, Caricillo. Richards, gone for sure, freeing $4.8million, Oduya and Regin, both replaceable with guys from the Rock, another $3.9million freed.

Saad will be the hardest to get re-signed, especially if he gets an offer sheet. But, I don't think that it will be as dire as some believe.

Saad gets at least 2.5 mil as he is on pace again for a 20 goal 50 point season

That leaves 700k for a bottom pairing and a fourth line. Bickel will have to go for them to make the cap.

Depending on Saad's numbers this year, I would consider putting forth an offer sheet. We have the cap space and he is young, has size, and can provide secondary scoring. A nice complimentary piece to our rebuild.

There may be other opportunities as well...

Burke and offer sheets don't happen, at least not the kind that would be successful. He's on record as opposing any offer sheet that is excessive, and if it isn't excessive, the other team always matches.

The UFA''s weren't included in that lineup. They have 3.2M to sign 8 players including Saad. That situation is dire.

That we may be able to take advantage of some teams in cap trouble is good but the low dollar may affect our spending as well.

Re Blackhawks.
If Hossa retires it would not be quite so bad. 9 million to sign 9 players is at least doable.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

I think Patrick Sharp is as good as gone in the off season.

There also would be a few mil of recapture penalties with Hossa. Not that he is retiring anyway.

No s*** said the Canadian $.

But really it is good news at the right time for the Flames.
I was just looking a UFAs this week, and the could probably re-up anyone they want, add a couple $5M players and still be under that cap. The longer this happens the tighter money will get with Teams that have given out long term contracts, so it could limit competition on the FA market this year.
