The team, with all it's depth, has become plug and play. Which is the best case scenario for an organization. Opens a lot of doors in terms of being able to move players to fill other needs. Also doesn't let the injury spector cause concern and maintains a constant level of competition for ice time.
For many years the Flames scouting team did a horrible job of drafting and developing talent. Essentially the main reason we fell to where we did. But man have they improved the last few seasons. It's almost scary to say that we have a surplus of young talent.
Pretty excited about what the next few years have to offer to the fans. If we can pick up another good player in the draft this year it'll be very interesting to see what this team looks like next season.
Too bad Bennett's shoulder's messed up. Could you imagine if we added him to the mix this season?
Good times for the Flames!! Thank god we're not Edmonton.

Well, hes only out for 6 months from the beginning of October so he'll be back in time for the playoffs....

Setoguchi is contributing? I don't think he is anywhere near what the team was expecting.

It's a good point actually. I like to think I'd be able to say the same if we were losing, but there doesn't seem to be any passengers. And our only whipping boy (Setoguchi) is someone who I think most of us understand why he's getting a short term shot and that it really is a short term issue.
Speaks volumes about our leadership.

He's been a lot better in the last 5 games or so IMO. I personally think he's going to start getting on the scoresheet soon.

I went to university with his surgeons son. I've bugged him a few times about Bennett and he said that his recovery is going extremely well. Fingers crossed this doesn't become a recurring problem for Bennett.

He hasn't been stinking up the joint the last game or two. His give-a-crap meter got dislodged from being stuck at low - but it isn't yet set at high. When he gets it to high some points will come.

He's actually played better lately. I don't mind keeping him as a 13/14th forward. I think he and Byron need to not be line mates, they are both snake bitten right now.

So if Bennett is healthy in say in March because he had an amazing recovery, he can do 2 weeks of conditioning in Addy, then play 9 or less games for the flames and not burn his ELC? What if he plays in the playoffs, does he burn his ELC?

I dont think the playoffs count, but thats pure speculation.
By then he'll have a bionic shoulder and he'll carry this team to the cup!

Don't think that is an option the Flames will look at, he needs to go to junior and come back next season ready to compete for a job. All imho.

Most of the dead weight on this team left the same day Butler did.
But now I feel I'm missing something, I've always had a whipping boy on this team but this year, I'm having a hard time finding one.
Setoguchi may be that person though.

I'm sure they'll be some rough games and we'll find someone to blame. Engelland made another pooched pass last night - didn't wind up in the net though. Diaz was pretty bad in Mtl.

We should turn this "no dead weight" thread into a "whipping boy" thread to spite OP.
For me, Glencross has looked pretty bad this year. He has the tools he just doesn't seem to have the drive and it's persistent. He is a turnover machine, honestly I've started counting and at least 75% of the time he has the puck, he turns it over vs. making a pass or getting the puck to the net. Also he usually misses the net on the opportunities he does get. Also stupid penalties...need I go on?
He has a great shot, he's a good skater and he hits. I love when he gets pissed off (minus the stupid penalties).

I'm openly a Glencross hater but he really hasn't been that bad in my eyes which probably means he's been pretty good. I don't think the team needs him moving forward and I'm all for trading him but he hasn't been that bad and the team is playing well. If the team turns it around and starts to "oil it up" I think he becomes one of the first guys traded.

well, as long as McGrattan sits in the pressbox I don't have a whipping boy. I don't think we are better with him on the ice and I am happy Hartley is playing others ahead of him.
and I think that Bennett will likely be heading back to junior if he plays at all this year. Just come back bigger and stronger next season!!!

We should all remember, despite his prior history, as of August this year Setoguchi was still looking for a signing.
That and what they are paying him lowers my expectations considerably. They are paying him less than he made as a rookie.
Is he doing well? Hell no. Is he a serviceable guy at $750k? Probably.

One small point of disagreement: I think Gio and Brody are already star players and would be on any team.

Diaz forever scarred me when he completely shat the bed a few weeks ago (the Chicago game maybe?) and did everything he could to setup some primo chances for the other team to score
