Relocating to Vancouver (Burnaby)

I've accepted a transfer to the company's office in Burnaby and I'm hoping that CP can help me identify 3-5 solid areas for next week's homescouting trip.

In broad strokes, walkability is a big deal to me although I certainly don't mind a 15-minute bike ride (even in the rain....). The office is in Metrotown in Burnaby, so I figure any place near that (ie. 6km) is great, as are any places within a few minutes walk of the Skytrain.

In terms of Calgary neighborhoods; I lived a VERY happy lifestyle by Mount Royal University, big fan of Marda Loop, and currently live in the Crescent Heights/Bridgeland area (which suits me well). Access to parks/pathways is a great bonus.

Vancouver or Burnaby doesn't matter to me. Housing prices are not an issue, just looking for a good neighborhood fit.

ANY advice is appreciated.

Burnaby is basically suburban tract housing, nothing wrong with it but bland, capital hill area around confederation park Burnaby mountain would be my favourite area, Hastings street has a decent Italian community so some nice delis.
If money was no object I'd tend to look at commercial drive Victoria area, sky trains close, hipster heaven, my hood, although when I moved in it was crack hoes and grow ops.

There are some decent homes tucked away around Canada Way / Royal Oak area that is close to Metrotown. Also some quieter areas in South Burnaby between Rumble and SW Marine Drive.

Killarney is an area in Vancouver close to the Burnaby-Vancouver border which is nice as well. The area just south of Killarney between 54th and Marine Drive is quite nice but expensive (Champlain Heights).

Burnaby Heights is really nice. Quick to downtown Vancouver, East Van, and is nice and walkable itself.

Commercial Drive is awesome, and 10 mins by skytrain to Metrotown against the traffic. But I'm biased: lived there for 10 years. I'm the original Drive yuppie.

Family home or single life style? Lots of different neighborhood styles out there depending on what you're looking for. I lean more towards the quieter areas with schools and parks close. Some childless friends chose the busier areas with pubs and restaurants.

I live at the base of Burnaby mountain and love it's central location to downtown and easy access to the highway. Skytrain is also very close.

If you're a ball or hockey player and looking to pick that up let me know, anyways looking for people for both.

Folks - thanks for the replies, this is exactly what I needed and VERY much appreciated!

Galakanokis, ideally I'm more inclined to have the 2br 2b townhouse kind of living but frankly neighborhood ameneties (shopping, parks and rec, tennis, Skytrain) is probably more important to me than selection of housing type (apartment, townhouse, single family...).

The one thing I've noticed thus far is that a lot of the townhouses tend to be a single unit below with a 2-story on top of it. Kinda different than what we see in Calgary....not sure how I feel about that, pros and cons.

Living close to the skytrain stations can get loud and pretty messy in some areas. Metrotown is a pretty busy hub, lots of buses and people. Smaller old houses and apartment buildings in the area.

I used to live in the Royal Oak part of Burnaby (Denbigh Avenue). My condo was a very short walk to a Safeway, sky train, and Metrotown, and NCIX. I would only drive to school and would walk to Safeway/Save On Foods to pick up groceries every week. Everything you could want is very close by.

Live in West Van and take a private chopper back and forth to Burnaby.

Around where I live there are a lot of traditional townhouses, I live in one, three levels, three bedrooms with three bathrooms. It's a good size, about 2100sqft. I know there are some newer townhome communities in new West that might work. They're really trying to build up new West.

Actually, when Falconettis first opened, I showed up with a couple Flames fans to watch on their projection screen. Think the owner was terrified his might become a Flames bar.
