6 years, $6.5M+ is my guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was over $7M.
Brodie is the more pressing extension and I think he gets 6 years @ $5.5M AAV (based on current play).

Ten billion. Yes...billion.
In all seriousness, his age goes against him if you start looking at comparables. Presumingly it would be safe to say he will start to decline. I'd wager a guess in the 6-7 range however.

I cannot believe how good he and Brodie have been. Gio is just so confident now and rarely makes a mistake. Just so awesome to watch what he has become. Flames should give Gio what he wants.

No clauses.

6 years? I don't know if we'd want to be paying a 39-40 year old playing 6.5+. I think a 3-4 year deal atleast gives the club some flexibility financially. If this rebuild comes to fruition, we'll have some high priced players to be paying for after 3-5 years.

I doubt he agrees to less than 5 years 5 @ $38M?

I think it'll depend on the term and whether he can keep playing at this level. Could be anywhere from $5.5-8+ I think, depending on his play through the rest of this season and how long the deal is.

Assuming his play continues, IMO -
- Takes a slight home town discount to retire in Calgary
- Team will be much better so more enticing to stay with
- Has mentored and been the captain for the majority of the team as they re built
- Worth 6-6.5m per year on a 3 year deal
- Free Agency could pay him in the 7-7.5 range
- Accepts 5.7 to stay with the flames

What would be ideal would be 3-4 years. What I think will happen will be something that takes him to basically the end of his career (39-ish). Gio's a great guy, leader, blah blah blah, but this next contract will have to set him up for the end of his hockey career. It's business and he and his agent will, IMO, go for max value - term and dollars.

To me I feel there has to be a big component in the contract that is almost back pay for dramatically over exceeding his value on this contract. When you factor in last year, and if his play doesn't decline this year and next, you got a 7+ million dollar player .57 cents on the dollar. I would have no issues with an overpayment, and a big one at that for a few years.
If someone told you in 07 that Phaneuf would be a laughing stock pylon in Toronto, and Gio would be not only the Captain of the Flames, but mentioned in talks for a Norris trophy, you would have been laughed off this site, even by myself, who has always hated Phaneuf.

If Giordano doesn't slow down and goes to free agency he'll get Subban money (except probably 3-4 years instead of 8).

Term, no idea, but the dollars per year will start at 7. That's assuming his play remains the same till that point, but lots of hockey to go of course.

He's going to have played 3 of his prime years on a discount. He's not doing it again, and that's fine. Pay him his 7 mil a year.

Subban money. LOL. He'll be 33, if you give him more than 5.5 I think you'll regret it.

4 years, 28m.
Year 1: 7.5
Year 2: 7m
Year 3: 7m
Year 4: 6.5m
That would be a solid contract.

Isnt Subban 7 million this year? Which is why I said 7-7.5 ... or is it more as time goes on.

I hope he agrees to something like 6x6 but could easily see him getting $7.5

I just remember back to the days when Gio was nothing more than a fringe player on the team, that sorta looked like Mr. Bean.
What absolutely blows me away is when you watch him do anything on the ice, it is with full tilt intensity. He never coasts for a puck, he sprints, he absolutely refuses to give up on any play, how many shots has the guy blocked with his face now? That is the only thing that scares me. How long can a guy play with that intensity, and stay healthy?
