Which side caved?
Also heard it's a 3 year deal.

3 years at 4m ... that's a solid deal for both sides IMO

That seems like plenty of money to me. Good deal for both sides.

Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
Johansen terms: $3M in 2014-15, $3M in 2015-16 and $6M in 2016-17.

What effect will that $6M in 2016-17 have on his next contract?

I just hope Johansen fires his agent. This kind of tactic doesn't favour either side as it looks like the jackets want to keep him long term and he wants to be there. All this did was make both of them look bad (the jackets not as bad though)

Looks like both blinked. Johansen wanted much more than that on average, but that $6 million tag in the final year is going to make him mighty expensive to re-sign in 2017 when he is one year shy of UFA.

This means his minimum qualifying offer is 6-point-something if the Jackets want to retain his rights after this contract, correct?
So he either gets a $6+m follow-on contract, or becomes a UFA when this deal expires?
(Edited: I see we were all thinking the same thing)

You honestly think this is the work of his agent and Johansen had no say in the process?

It's just business. Can't read too much into things. Johansen's agent got him somewhere between an addition 500k-1M per season during these negotiations - why would he fire him? He also guaranteed Johansen will be paid 6M+ per on his next contract.

If RJ files for arbitration in 3 years, he will become a UFA the year after.
Dumb stuff by the Jackets.

I think he's to blame too but I'm thinking his agent had a lot more to do with things. Someone needs to post the LOTR where the nephew is whispering in the King's ear. His agent has done this before with Turris and I"m sure he'll do it again. I'll bet his next contract is handled differently if he has a new agent.

I think this is his goal anyways. Become an UFA as soon as possible.

True only if it actually goes to arbitration. This year only 1 of 23 total files (20 by players, 3 by teams) was actually settled through arbitration. That player (Sobotka) is playing in the KHL. If Johansen continues to progress, I believe the Jackets will back up the truck, like the Habs did for Subban.

I don't see any way this isn't a win for Overhardt and Johansen
deal is now set up with all the options he would want after 3 years
negotiate long term deal with plenty of leverage as 1 year away from UFA (at age 25)
accept 6m 1 year qualifying offer and go UFA at 25

Same scenario as Subban. When is he going to be a UFA again?

On the face of it, the deal looks fair but really RJ just got 4/18m if he continues his progression as projected. The plus for Columbus is that it gives them an extra year to evaluate RJ to determine if he's worth 6 million a year. They'll know exactly what kind of player he is in the next 3 years.
