Question Is it possible to dream whilst under general anesthetic?

When I had my broken wrist operated on last year they put me under general anesthetic so the surgeon could put in the plate and screws. When I awoke in the recovery room I was surprised that I didn't dream. One minute you're being put under and then you awake. All i've been told is that's as close to death as you can get without actually dying.

Just curious as to wether anyone here might have an answer?

My inprecise knowledge is that dreams occur in rem sleep, just as you fall asleep and wake up, under anesthesia you don't go through the rem stage

I've dreamt during surgery. I remember my mom saying she has, as well.

You may dream before waking up, but I don't think you would while being operated on as you would be under to deep of sleep

I've had a few surgeries under general and I asked my doctor about that once, and he basically stated that you don't dream under general, however that wacky stage as you start to wake up can be interpreted by you as dreams.

When I first woke up there was a couple of nurses looking over me asking me if I was okay. I asked if this was heaven and the all started to laugh.

I also asked the surgeon before they put me under if I will ever play the violin again. He said I don't see why not. My response was that's great doc as I could never play it before. The room erupted in laughter.

i've only had general anesthetic once - after cutting up my hand pretty good when i worked in a restaurant

i remember joking around with the anesthetist and him saying to me that he wanted me to count backwards from 10. i asked him if 10 would be enough. his reply was something like, 'ok hot shot, start at 100!'

my reply was, 'no problem, i got this!'

one hundred, ninety nine, ninety ei..... annnnnd out!

the next thing i knew i was in recovery, where i promptly threw up 3 times! nice!

I went under once and they did the same thing, count backwards from 100 and I got to maybe 98, and the nurse said that the first thing that I did when I woke up was start counting down from 98.

i will say that I never felt rested or like I'd had a good sleep after surgery.

Last time I went under my wife told me when I was groggy I flirted with the nurses. Yup, sounds like me.

My ex was somewhat an expert on "dreams and dream recall"

I guess studies show (from what she told me)

- animals/mammals(even whales dream) average 2-5 dreams per sleep (one every 60-90 minutes or so)

- you can only remember you last dream of any givin sleep.

- 50% of the time most don't remember dreaming when they wake

- 90% of the last remembered dream is forgotten completely within 10 minutes.

- as you age you dream less.

Your just getting old Dion

I have been put under general anesthesia twice in my life, and the one solace it gave me, was it made me very comfortable with death.

It is a literal blink in the eye. Complete darkness for not even what seems like a second, and you are back even though you have been under for a couple hours. If death comes that quick, dark and easy, I am a happy camper.

Being under general anesthetic is quite the experience. It is like you are out and then slowly wake up and you have no idea how much time has passed.....

Last fall I broke my arm, had surgery, was under a general and they also gave me some type of nerve blocker and for about 12 hours after the surgery I could not move my arm at all - felt odd that mentally I was trying to move it with all my strength......

I'm pretty sure I woke up part way through my wisdom teeth being pulled. I distinctly remember groggily waking up and then the doctor reacting, and then I was gone again.

I didn't dream during any of it, though, unless the whole waking up scene was a dream, which I think it wasn't.

Why did you ask if you could play it again? This implies that you were able to play it before. I get that it never happened, but at least quote the joke properly.
