Default Dedicated GPS with wireless map updates

Does this exist? I figured it'd be standard by now but can't find anything like that.

Trying to find a standalone GPS unit that can be updated without plugging into a computer.

Almost figuring a phone with the Garmin or TomTom app and wifi access for updates might be the only way.

It sure doesn't seem like it, does it? I've been looking for something similar with no success either. It's odd what's happened to the standalone GPS device, not much development at all. I guess there probably isn't much demand with everyone using their phones these days.

I recall finding an app a year or so ago for my Android that seemed pretty impressive, full N.A. map but having a standalone GPS device that can take a bit of abuse would be much better IMO.

I just purchased an iPad mini and vehicle mount kit for my in-laws to use as a GPS for an upcoming NA RV tour. Co-pilot is a good free GPS app with offline maps, but I ended up getting them the Rand McNally RV app ($100) for what they are going. The only downside is I had to buy the cellular iPad as the WiFi only does not have a GPS.

I'm using a Garmin here in Spain and i actually find it kind of annoying, but that might just be because I'm not in North America? A phone app might suit you better. Have you tried offlining areas in Google maps?

It's not for myself, it's for a friend's dad. A phone with one of the paid apps is one of the alternatives. Doesn't even need a data plan as the updates could be done via wifi.

Is he going off the grid for an extended period? What makes the computer free wifi updates so critical? For the most part once you have the latest map, you should be pretty good for a while. I dunno if I'd trust the traffic info anyway.

He's off the grid to start with, and computer free updates are critical when one doesn't have a computer.

Why not purchase a used phone (like an S2 or something) install a free GPS app and he can update it when he is on wifi (which is everywhere). Probably end up cheaper than a dedicated GPS machine as is.

If he isnt tech savvy at all, you can put AutoPilot on it and boot right into the GPS app. slap a Garmin sticker on it if you want to really impress him
