Shoalts: Rogers fears it overbid for NHL rights. Using cost-cutting measures
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...board/follows/
Quote:
While the NHL is enjoying the benefits of the new Canadian television deal, the same cannot be said for the people writing those big cheques. The word out of Rogers Communications Inc., is that the board of directors has everyone below them sweating to wring every cent of revenue out of the NHL broadcast rights on every platform the company owns or controls.
There is much fear the company overpaid for the deal, as the Rogers-BCE Inc., consortium did several years ago for the Olympic rights and wasn’t able to turn a profit. Cost-cutting is the management mantra, which led to a steady stream of layoffs and firings.
The trouble for Rogers is that it only has two ways to earn revenue on the package – selling advertising and attracting new subscribers for its networks that will carry the games. It is possible the company could ask the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for permission to raise its cable fees but people in the industry do not believe the CRTC would agree.
So the heat is on Rogers’ advertising sales staff and viewers can expect to see all of the best games outside of Saturday night on the Sportsnet and City networks in order to entice people to sign up.
|
Article also mentions that each team will get an extra $5 million cash each thanks to the first payment of the Rogers deal and the Stadium Series

That sure didn't take long. I figured they would at least be partway into a year to realize they screwed up.

This is kind of what we were all fearing, wasn't it? That instead of investing into its already mediocre product to elevate it towards the level of TSN and CBC, it would start penny pinching even more. Yay.

If I read that right, then that's what I see as well. Could the bush league broadcasting actually get any worse?
Yikes.

Here we go, a long 12 years of subpar broadcasting quality from Rodgers.

Almost as predictable as the Oilers starting Draisaitl on the 2nd line. Everyone on this forum was saying it.

They can start off with some positive cost-cutting measures then in that case; get rid of Cherry, Healy, Doug MacLean, Kypreos, Cox, Spector, among others. Oh and I am well aware CBC probably pays all of Cherry and Healy's salary, but if Rogers pays any of it they might as well just rid of them as well.
Heck just get rid of everyone except for Friedman, and just start from scratch; which would be a major step up from what they have now.

For me it will be. 12 years of poor broadcasts. I probably will watch 50 games a season. It'll be a long and tiresome time.

ROFL ... Perhaps increasing the bid ten fold over the last contract was too much? No #### morons.

It would sure be nice to know how much tsn bid. I have seen some cool print ads in mcleans and sports net magazine that give me some hope that their broadcasts may have some creativity

A friend of mine got laid off from Rogers today, so it's already begun.
Way to go Rogers, you jerkbags. Maybe you should have spent your money improving your broadcasts first before bidding an incomprehensible sum for the national broadcast rights.

yeah we'll have to see what it looks like. How can anyone estimate what the profit/loss will be when this type of schedule has never been done. This many games on this many platforms. Having games on two national networks CBC and City is interesting too.

I'm in a Rogers area but I assume City TV is a basic cable channel for pretty much everyone. I get the local Sportsnet in the basic package as well but I suspect most non-Rogers packages go with TSN over Sportsnet.
I'd be worried about them slamming local games onto Sportsnet One or some other channel where you need some mega package to get it.
