Default Summer Snowmageddon 2014 (split from Weather)

Deserves its own thread given the carnage inflicted.

Already received 15+cm and another 10ish on the way today. Be safe people, a huge portion of traffic lights are out city wide

Made it downtown this morning and decided to come home to cruise the neighbourhood shaking off trees. The 30+ year old elms can't handle much snow.

If you can, keep shaking throughout the day, it will help keep snow off and prevent more from sticking as it warms up today.

just gave mine round 2 with a extendable pole. 13' reach plus one standard surferguy gives me a reach of about 18'!

Lots of trees down in Westgate now.

If you have one, an extendable pruner is a godsend right now. The Clippers hook beautifully around branches allowing you to shake whole sections of trees instead of whacking at it like the rest of them.

I was able to do 2 whole blocks of Elms in just under 2 hours with that thing

I shook the crap out of the my nine trees this morning, just stood underneath and let the snow come crashing down on me. Good times.

I don't know how Enmax is going to get ahead of this, the amount of lines down is staggering.

My power was out at home since 6am -- got bored and went to my parents house. So much for playing Destiny all day on my day off...

You're right. Basically any community with overhead service and mature trees is down (basically anything, what, pre-80s).

And a huge kudos to all emergency crews working on this right now.

CFD is going absolute non-stop right now and will likely be for the rest of the day.

Great that on that site it says Spruce Cliff was resolved at 0507 this morning. Nope.

Thankfully have power. Only lost it briefly this morning,

As for trees, I'm losing poplar branches like crazy. My kid pointed one out and as we were looking, we watched a massive branch fall off the neighbours tree. As I was trying to take a picture for a 311 request for the one on my side, the tree beside me crashed down. I think I've had 4 large branches come off mine, the tree on my left is gone, the tree on the right lost two large ones and then multiple trees down my street have lost large branches. All you hear outside is eerie cracking sounds and the occasional rather loud crash.

The drive to the kid's school was even worse. Light standards in the power lines, trees in the road. It's going to be a huge mess.

I'm glad my fridge and freezer is not too stocked at this moment. I would hate to have too much food go to waste. I'm also glad we have a natural gas stove so that if the power remains out for an extended period at least we can cook some lunch and dinner.

Good thing didn't happen during an actual cold snap in the winter when temps could be well below freezing.

Exercise caution when shaking trees. A gentlemen in my neighborhood ended up in the hospital concussed, when a branch he was shaking gave way hitting his bean.

Saving trees is great and all, but not at the expense of your well-being.

This must be why my neighbour said "don't stand under there when you shake". I replied "Its okay, I'm already soaked!".

Oh well, gotta save the trees!

How does one shake a tree without standing under it?

**Got bean'd in the noggin by a wayward branch myself this morning.**

I meant all the power outages for extended periods of time. It isn't too bad being without heat for a few hours when the temperature is around 0 but at -10 or -20 the house can cool down pretty quickly.

The power outages are unique to this temperature and the time of the year. The thick Snow fall + Leaves still being on the tree's have helped trap snow in the tree's.

When it is colder the snow is not as wet and there are no leaves on the tree's.

A pretty devastating impact on our trees. A sad day. The cold is annoying, but the loss of trees really bums me out.
