I posted this in the cool/funny thread, but I feel that it warrants its own thread. This deserves the Nobel Prize, and I would be willing to donate in a CP group-buy of these things so that we, as an online community, could create little legacy of our own. A hockey website coming together to provide clean drinking water to those in need I think is an outstanding idea.

Yes lets do it, someone update the thread when the time comes, this deserves lots of support! Rarely do I get giddy over an invention, but this one is truly amazing.

I like the concept but I am not sure how well they will work in the field.
One of the big issue with anykind of development or relief effort is that it isn't self sustaining. This type of solution requires a continuous supply of these devices to be given to people.
The second bigger issue with this device is the plastic tray. If the tray breaks the filter becomes limited in value. Non-Replacable parts can make these concepts fail.
Before helping fund something like this I would love to here from some development groups not assoicated with it to see how they see it would work in the field. There are tons of good intentioned development projects which end up failing because they don't address issues on the ground.

That was my thought as well, as soon as I saw the tray component.
I know that even charity:water (my current favourite water-focused charity, due to their 100% model and their transparency in operations) has had some challenges in being able to keep their wells functioning as they've scaled up and grown.
But clean water is such a fundamental challenge that affects so many other things - not just health, but it's been tied to education and income potential as well.
Here's a video from charity:water that explains WHY water is so important:
I expect it will take many creative solutions, all working together, to ultimately fix the problem. So I'm excited to see how this project evolves, and how it can fit into the bigger picture.
