This is what the market is. Everyone seems to have finally clicked-in on the fact that centres are THE scarcity in this industry. They're hard to acquire, and expensive to retain. Brassard is good and young. Likely tops out at a #2 centre, which at 5M - will be looked at as an absolute steal in the next 2 years.

"Sureloss" is just the name Bingo and team has assigned to their aggregating news bot they built clandestinely. It even has a personality mechanism to make it look like he's a real person, complete with Join Date, location, and avatar.

Looks like the Rangers are going 'Full Oiler.'
They went on a good run and are now signing pretty much everyone who was a part of it to long-term deals.
Its like the 05/06 Oilers off-season all over again.

The necessary parallel we're waiting for is for Lundquist to pull a Pronger and suddenly demand a trade.

Backlund has never broken 40 points. Brassard has past 4 years except for lockout season but still was on pace for 50pts. As of now I don't think he's seeing these dollars but if he has a big year that could change.

The way things are going it honestly seems like players (for forwards at least) that aren't signing an ELC or RFA bridge contract are going to have a cap hit on scale approximate to:
1 million : 10 pts
A guy like Brassard who looks like a safe bet to put up ~50 points a season for the next several years gets 5 million a year. Not saying it's an entirely reasonable amount, just that it seems to be the going rate in the current economic climate for a player in his UFA year and 4 of 5 years for this deal are UFA for Brassard.
It really drives home the importance of having your cap properly structured and managing the contract years for young blue chip players to take full advantage of their earlier prime years at a reasonable price.

If you use this contract as a comparable, I think Backlund will come in somewhere in the $4 million to $5.5 million range depending on the season he has.

Even if it turns out to be a bad contract, Sather will always sucker someone into trading for it.

Slight overpayment considering Brassard was a RFA. I highly doubt he would have gotten more (say 6 million) if he were a UFA.
It seems like the Rangers were willing to pay more to avoid the mudslinging that always happens at arbitration hearings. They probably thought not having Brassard have hard feelings over the process was worth the extra 0.5 or 1 million per year.

True that Backlund has never broken 40 points but I think you also have to look at the environment they played in at the time. Brassard was the first line center for Columbus early in his career and put up approximately the same amount of points as Backlund. Last year was Backlunds 24 year old season and he got 39 points where as in Brassards 24 year old season he got 41 playing with Rick Nash. Backlund has never been a first line center on the Flames with both PP and PK time like Brassard received.
There development has been along the same timeline so I don't think that Backlund is too far off of getting 4.5-5 Million. Using points to analyze a players worth is fine if all other things are equal. Backlund has done alright with the icetime and workload he has been given.

Brassard is way better than Backllund. Not sure if it's an appropriate comparison.
