Default Brad Treliving on the FAN960 at 4:45 pm today

Rob Kerr (@SNRobKerr) tweeted at 2:47pm - 24 Jul 14:

Big additions to @Sportsnet960 roster of guests today:# 300pm @JeffGarciaJGFA and #Flames GM Brad Treliving at 445pm.

Live Summary:

- Ortio
- 2-way year one, 1-way year two on his contract.
- Young Goalie, relatively new to North America.
- Wants to create competition at NHL level. Did that by bringing Jonas (Hiller) in.
- Thinks Ortio has a very bright future.
- It's a good thing if Ortio plays significant time in the AHL this year.
- "I like the player, Ortio, a lot."
- No restriction on sending Ortio up and down between NHL and AHL.
- Talked to Joni about the process of becoming an NHL player.
- Need to educate prospects on the process of becoming an NHL player. Goaltender position is the most difficult.
- Never seen a goaltender that has been hindered by playing more in the AHL.
- Discussing with Joni creating a roadmap to the NHL for him.
- "We believe he has the ability and temperament to be an NHL goaltender."

- There is a different timeline for every player.
- Rule is, no player is ever hurt by spending too much time in the minors.
- Players have to go through the process and spend significant time in the AHL.
- "Significant time" is different for each player.
- It is not punishment to go to the AHL. It is how you learn to be an NHLer.

- Colborne
- Watched Joe a lot in his draft year. He needed to develop physically.
- This is still a young, developing player.
- The challenge put to Joe: Don't just be in the NHL. Be a good player in the NHL.
- Ecstatic to be playing in Calgary.
- Very personable.
- Great physical attributes... 6'5" and 220 lbs right now.
- Need to get more from the group we have. Need him to take a step this year.
- Will continue to "play with" Joe at Wing and Center, to see what works. Ability to play multiple positions is a strength. Can never have enough centers.

- Trying to find the right fit for open staff positions.

- Still looking for depth defensemen.

- Working on Bouma and Cundari contracts.

- In the market to add depth to the blueline. Probably someone on a 2-way to provide call-up depth.

- We are definitely not a finished product yet. (Not done making changes to the team this offseason.)

DONE.

Guessing he'll be commenting on Colborne and Ortio, Bouma, might address the Franson talk. Excellent.

Awesome leaving work 15min early to enjoy the drive home. I assume he will address Colborne, Ortio, talk about remaining RFA's, discuss maybe the Glencross extension talks, and mention what else he is looking for ahead of training camp.

I hope he gives word that they're working on extensions for Backlund and Brodie. More important to lock those two up longterm before the season gets underway IMO.

Jordan Sigalet and Mike Thompson are officially part of the Adirondack coaching staff now.

Good to see that Flames are working on bringing in some depth d-men. Our top 6 d-men are set (Giordano, Brodie, Russell, Wideman, Smid, Engelland) and Wotherspoon is better served to be playing lots of minutes in the AHL as opposed to being the 7th d-man in Calgary.

I wonder if the Flames have any interest in Jamie McBain, Michael Del Zotto or Raphael Diaz.

I would be shocked if Treliving wasn't in talks with MDZ and other notable fringe D-Men.

I thought I read somewhere that McBain signed somewhere in Europe today though.. Maybe I dreamed it up.

Also sounded like Treliving is definitely drumming up some trades too. Should be interesting to see what he can dredge up on his first couple of trades.

Yea, kinda forgot that he was still available. He had a solid breakthrough year with Carolina, surprised he was no re-signed/signed anywhere else.

Id take a chance on him for a one year deal, solid number 7 guy to have while Wotherspoon continues to develop.

Brian Lee from TB. Believe he is retiring due to a knee injury.

Other d men of note left unsigned

Sheldon brookbank
Corey Potter
Carlo Colaiacovo
Matt Gilroy
Mark Fraser
justin Falk
Ryan Whitney
Nolan Yonkman
Aaron Rome
Matt Taormina

Have to think the insistence on a two way is holding a signing up. Wonder if they were in on local boy ellerby who re signed with the jets today

Well, then that was a pretty poor guess on my part.

You are correct, he retired a week and a half ago.

That was a different Brian Lee.

It was initially reported as the wrong one, which was why all the confusion.

But the one you're thinking of really did have knee surgery.

Okay, now I'm confused. I was thinking of the former 1st round pick, right-handed shooting d-man that played for the Sens and Lightning. It says he retired on the 11th, had knee surgery last year. That's correct, no?

There has been one Brian Lee to play in the AHL, drafted 9th overall by Ottawa (2005).

There is another Brian Lee who was drafted 71st overall by Anaheim (2002), he last played in Italy during the 2011-2012 year.
