Friedman: Flames looking at Cody Franson

24. Word is Calgary would also like to make another move on the blue-line. Dennis Wideman's name is out there, but the defender does have protection. I think the Flames looked at Cody Franson, but that's a complex transaction because the Leafs don't want to give him away and he's only got a year before free agency.

I'd do it. As already discussed, Franson is pretty much an upgraded, younger version of Wideman. If we can move Wideman right after, I'd go for it, lots of teams still needing a RHD.

I'd take franson. He's not as physical as you'd like a guy with his size to be, and he may not be the most mobile/effective defender, but he's a 0.5 PPG type dman, who i think can be a better player when on a more balanced team (ie. not the "what is defense" maple leaves team).
only question is what return would be fair to the leafs? would it be a prospect and/or defender off the NHL roster (wideman, russel, smid), other?

According to McKenzie, Franson was the player the Leafs were supposed to send to the Habs for Gorges before Gorges used his NTC to block the trade.
So that gives you an idea of what the Leafs value Franson at.

Not sure if related but:
James Mirtle @mirtle · 2h
Was told early in weekend that Leafs would settle in $3.25-million range. Same source said Franson would then be dealt, so we'll see.

Franson for Wideman you do in a heartbeat but I can't see the Leafs wanting that even with salary retained.
Franson for Smid would another easy deal to make but again can't see the Leafs having any interest in that deal either.

They need defense, you would think they'd at least consider it. But, we do too, I'd rather give Wideman at 50% retained. Retaining his salary benefits the Leafs contract wise and also the age factor. We can afford to retain his salary.

I've been saying for awhile to get Franson over Wideman. Franson is younger and more physical. Still RH. Better puck mover as well. Wideman is better in his own end. But Smid-Franson pair would be good.

I think its a good chance Franson will be a Flame this year
I'm a fan, as long as we don't overpay I'd be very happy to have Franson as our 3/4 and PP specialist
There's a few Franson haters on CP but he's a lot better than some give him credit for, he'd fit in great here

Franson is quite physical. He just doesn't skate or play defense well.

No point trading for Franson unless you have a long term contract in your back pocket - or the expectation of one at least. Otherwise, wait for free agency next year. Would be a good pick-up though.

If Wideman is not seen as a part of the long term solution, moving his $$ perhaps with some salary retained, to get Franson is a good move. The Flames get 2/3 of a season to look at Franson and then either ship him out or sign him long term

Maybe Wideman to Detroit for some stuff and then some similar stuff to Toronto for Franson

Since I'll never get the Sicamous kid I really want on this team, I would accept Franson.

I suppose it belongs on a different thread but I found it more intriguing that the Flames weren't mentioned in #46:
46. For a while now it's been assumed that if 2010 first-round pick Kevin Hayes decides not to sign in Chicago, his first choice would be Florida. That's where his brother Jimmy plays. There are rumblings, though, that the Panthers may choose not to go this route. That makes the favourites Boston (where he went to school) or Pittsburgh (Tom Fitzgerald is a cousin). If he does not sign with the Blackhawks by Aug. 15, he will be a free agent.

We'll never get Weber. Edmonton gets him for Yakupov and Eberle

I believe in the Jays.
|
Blah, if we had to take a leaf cast-off I'd rather have Gardiner.

While I also would prefer Gardiner, he would cost much more then Franson.
