I just hope the term is longer than one or two years so we can relax with the endless speculation every couple of years. We'll see how the dollars work after his performance this season. Not that its a concern mind you with the Flames having a bunch of cap. Which should be used keeping their own talent primarily.

Safe to say that puts Brodie at 5.5 a year?

Not really a big deal if you sign Brodie term. He's only going to get better.

It is still a year away so it really depends on if he progresses or regresses this year

If Brodie takes another step foward this season, I'd easily pay him 5+. Him getting a contract like that means he'll have earned it. I hope that happens.

Doubtful as Franson has been more consistent putting up offensive numbers but they are pretty similar in this aspect so I would expect pretty similar money to Franson unless Brodie has a break out offensive season.

I don't think there's any way he gets north of 5, lets just see how this year goes first. Last year he played great but he still had some holes in his game. IF he keeps getting better and works on his defensive game more, I could see 5 mill being a deal but if we gave him 5 and he didn't improve, he'd be a sore spot for fans.

I was about to say, how is it we figure Brodie is worth more contractually than Franson at this point in time?
Franson has absolutely accomplished more at the NHL level and been more consistent (also older mind you), and should command a richer contract when comparing the two if they both signed today.

based on the role and quality of competition i assume both players have played, brodie likely will garner a higher value contract than franson?

Brodie is so much better defensively than Franson that it's difficult to quantify.

If the Flames are going to pay for Brodie just make it a long term deal. The cap space won't affect this team for another 3 seasons or so and he will grow into the contract.

Flames fans who feel Brodie is going to drive a higher value contract today than Franson did are simply over rating him because they like him. That's actually a nice change though.

Brodie will get $3.95 million so that the fans still think it's a good deal.

Which is why it was another huge miss by the previous regime not to sign him to a long term deal (which is what the Brodie camp was seeking).

No it was not.
How many times have we seen long-term deals at someone so young cause their production/play to decline so quickly?
It's not like the Flames are in a cap situation the next few years where we won't be able to afford this.
This in my mind is a win win, if he plays well, pay him the money. If his play declines, pay him accordingly...we have the money either way to do so.
