Flames Development Camp Tips

This is the year that I finally get to take my son to the camp. I will be driving up from Lethbridge for the day and I am off all week so I can pick any day, is there any day that would be better than another? I would love to see the scrimage but I'm really not interested in showing up hours early to get one of the few hundred seats so I'm willing to settle for lighter crowds and hopefully more access. Also weird question, is there a concession open? My son seems to be constantly hungry this summer

The cafeteria was open last year.

The schedule hasn't been released yet, but given that Tuesday is scheduled from 10am - 12:45pm and Wednesday is 10am - 12:00pm I would think those are the scrimmages. But we'll have to wait to find out for sure.

There was a concession open there last year, should be open again.

Depending on the age of your son you may not be in a seat the whole time, my boy sat for maybe half an hour then it was adventure time. But you can watch from the concourse too.

They also had roster sheets last year which was really handy.

I was under the impression the scrimmage was on a week end, if the scrimmage is mid week, do you still have to get there super early, also what does that arena hold, I had heard it was 300-400 tops

This is the rink:

You can see there are only seats at one end of the rink. I believe they only let people stand around the glass in that area too.

Last time the first scrimmage was on the Sunday I believe, but the camp may have also started midweek to begin with.

Seems more likely they do a few days of drills and whatnot, then scrimmages near the end.

Here is last year's schedule.
Day 1: Testing
Day 2 and 3: Skill Development
Day 4: Scrimmage
Day 5: Skill Development
Day 6: Scrimmage
Day 7: Skill Development

So I would guess the scrimmages will be
Monday, July 7th 10am - 1:30pm
and
Wednesday
, July 9th 10am - 12:00pm

Sweet, I was planning on heading down on Monday! I hope you are right about that.

Do they announce when they plan on those scrimmages? Or is it just luck.

You've been able to stand right at ice level in years past. Kind of cool you can usually peak in on some player interviews and whatnot.

Last year some kid got an autographed Gaudreau puck. His dad didn't know who he was and the player sheet was wrong so I pointed JG out to them on the ice and told the kid to hold onto that puck. JG subsequently did some pretty awesome things that had the arena going "ooooo". I hope JG becomes that kid's favorite player.

I hope they do the scrimmage in the big rink (rink "A") this year, I don't know why they didn't last year. A LOT more seating there.

Because that's international sized ice. They want the camp held on NHL sized ice.

Go on monday for the scrimmage. That's the most enjoyable part of the development camps.

I believe they'll be staying on the smaller rink again, as they want to develop the kids on NHL sized ice (esp the euro players coming over).

I went about 15 minutes before it started last year and got a front row seat (mind you in the corner) but it wasn't even packed at that point.

Can't say the same about this year, though. Maybe more people will hear about it and want to see Bennett play.

Loved the amount of kids getting autographs last year. Prospects really seemed energized by all the attention.

Really, I can't wait to see a few things: (hopefully there's enough video coverage)

  • Smith and Kanzig standing side by side.... then Gaudreau between them.
  • Gaudreau being centered by Bennett
  • Seiloff actually skating since he's had a rough year.
  • Jankowski. He's underrated by so many fans because of their disdain for Feaster, and for where he was picked. None of which are his fault. He's got sick hands, and is such a smooth skater.
  • A good look at the 2014 draft class as a whole.
  • A good look at McDonald.
