I remember when Steam sales used to have fun achievements you could do for cool prizes, instead of just being sales. I used to dedicate those to weeks to gaming (usually games I hadn't played before).

Blame people who gamed the system and ruined it for everyone.

You can buy Steam Wallet cards at EBGames/GameStop. They are a good deal because you pay in Canadian Dollars but you get USD in your Steam Wallet. (i.e. you pay $50 Canadian and get $50 USD)
EDIT: Unfortunately they changed it since the last sale. They are $22 for $20 and $55 for $50.

As always, buy games that are either deals of the day, flash sales or community choices. There is also a big round up of the top selling games on the last day as well.
I am probably going to limit myself to $50 this year. I don't really have a whole lot on my wishlist and frankly, some of those games I am never going to buy.

I just went to EB games and the $50 steam cards are $55. So it's not really a deal.

Is Steam like Origin where if I purchased games, I will have to have something from them installed on my machine to install and play the game (and potentially lose the game) or do you get a game download like if I went to the store and purchased it?

Steam acts as a downloading service. There is a way to run games downloaded via steam without Steam, likewise you can put non-steam downloaded/disc based games into steam and run it via the steam client.
Edit- I did not hit edit. I am dumb.
