Default Alternate Captains?

We all know Gio is one of the top captains in the league. With Cammy gone who gets his A? Should Glenny keep his or should it be placed on another jersey? Do you like having different alternates for home and away?

For me, I would much prefer 2 permanent alternates, regardless of home or away. I like Glencross, but I think he can be moody when things aren't going his way and would like to see another player named as the alternate. My best case would be:

Hudler. Took Monahan under his wing, great team guy, and probably the highest point getter for the season.

Backlund. Steady improvements, good two way ability, and another solid team guy. Perfect vet for the players to look up to, but still young enough that he will be around when the team is competitive again.

Honorable mention to Brodie.

I don't think they'll take the one off Glencross. Stajan and Backlund probably rotate the other one.

Hudler, Brodie, and Smid as the injury replacements if two of the regulars are hurt.

In a world where players wouldn't be offended and risk them underperforming as a result, and where ice time is a non-factor for captains I would cycle between three:

Backlund
Hudler
McGrattan

Three players who have demonstrated amazing leadership and established themselves as role models and sounding-boards to some of our younger players.

It would be great to see it on Stajan as well, but I'm not convinced he has a lasting role on the roster unfortunately.

Probably Stajan.

Should be Backlund and Stajan. Will be Stajan and Glencross.

McGrattan, who plays 4 minutes a game, cannot be an assistant captain.

He is signed for four more seasons and has the longest current contract on the team.

He might not play it out to the end in Calgary, but at this moment in time, he's definitely here for the long-term.

Backlund should have one of the A's. Time for someone who will be part of the next generation get a letter. After Glencross is gone, you give the other A to Monahan.

I hope you're right, and I love seeing him with the A. It's just this feeling I have everytime I look at our roster. It's a great issue to have, I just keep having a hard time working him into the roster (worse with Bennett in the mix) and I'm sure the brass does too.

But my choices are based on peoples feelings not mattering and ice-time not being a factor.

So realistically, with logic... he's got a well earned A

Backlund took his career to the next level when they gave him the "A" last year. He's earned it and should at least rotate with Stajan. If it were up to me, i'd have it sewn onto his sweater permanently.

Leadership qualities can be appreciated without giving out the A, one great example is McGrattan. From my understanding an A is also given in order so that a team will have someone that can talk to an official during any point in the game. As a result, I think it should be Backlund, one of Russell/Wideman, and one of Stajan/Glencross.

I hate the alternating captains thing because it feels "no good". But if they go that route, I like Stajan/Glencross & Backlund/Hudler.

Backlund and Stajan for me. Was tempted to say Lance purely on his work ethic, but maybe later..

I lover seeing Backlund with the A last year after working his way out of the doghouse. It really underscored his turnaround.

Backlund deserves it. I don't think Glencross does anymore so I'd take his away and give it to one of Stajan or Hudler (unless management plans on trading either of those guys)

Stajan and Glencross for sure will be A's. Both plays are very well respected in the organization and by their teammates. I could see them still rotating the A between some players as it is a great way to get some of the players involved and mentor them. Backlund is definitely in the wings and if they decide to rotate some games I could definitely see him in the mix.

Is that a rule or something? I think Big Ern would be a great assistant. Just because he plays the least amount of minutes doesn't mean he isn't a leader on or off the ice.

I don't know about this anymore. The organization has changed a lot and so has the roster. With the new "always give 100%" mentality I can really see Glencross falling out of favour with management and possibly teammates. If fans can see that Glencross "takes nights off" I'm sure the people who get paid to be there see it too. I honestly don't even know if Glencross is in the teams long term plans either. They could see him as a player they want here for the rest of his career but they could also see him gone this year. I just don't think Glencross has shown that he deserves the "A" and I think it should be up for grabs at camp and in the pre season. I think they should let the players decide who gets it.
